"Who drives fat oxen should himself be fat." Whether the mandarin smiles in compliment to this repartee depends, perhaps, on his 'tem- perament.

We have shown this item, to several persons who assert that they too have "penetrated into the interior of China," and they agree in pro- nouncing it excellent. Among its strong points are the observation that the Chinese refuse to "originate any sort of pleasantry whatever (just what, might be expected from such a phlegmatic and unresponsive race); that each Chinese gentleman has a pocket," and stops at a bookseller's to buy a joke-book on the way. to a "party" (just what we should anticipate from so conservative and petrified a people); and that every man who wishes to make remark does so only after consulting his remark book (which is exactly correspondent to what we know of Chinese devotion to the literary models of the past). This is certainly the plan adopted at literary examinations for degrees, when the "Chinese gentleman" is often padded with readymade essays, and if at examinations, why not at a "party" Another happy hit is the introduction of the technical pame of "fricasee of rats," which, as we all know, is "Kubla Khan." The picture of the mandarin and the post on their way to the table, whipping out their copies of Thomson's Seasons and of Dr. Johnson's works, (although the mandarin was obliged to aker the quotation to a slight extent) is in all its parts true to the life, and must remind considerable every reader who has any experience, of many similar occurrences which he has witnessed, albeit he did not perhaps at the time apprehend the fall force of the quotations pointed out.

We never study information of this species without, in the phraseology of young Mr. Twist, calling for "more," and there are several reasons which lead us to infer that the supply is likely to be regular and unfailing.

Ia the first place, the Chinese are now felt as a factor over almost the whole civilised world; if not directly, then indirectly. Did we not hear the other day that Chinese labourers are to be introduced into Pomerania? And when that shall have been accomplished, if it ever is ac- complished, we should think there might be an increased interest on the part of the Berlin newspapers in all sorts of paragraphs relating to the Chinese. It is more or less the same in all countries.

at 9 AM.. The Chinese, and that

which relates to them, attract attention in an ever increasing degree. It is one of the most commonplace observations that the Chinese are a race in many respects antipedal to occidentals. The list of.contradictions to our habits which most frequently thrust themselves upon us in the Celestial Empire-a list originally published in the Chinese Repository, and thence copied into the Middle Kingdom, is long since familiar In our ears as household wards.. The equally antithetic paragraph which Arst appeared In one of the letters of Mr. Wingrove Cooke to the Times, and which begins "China is a country where roses have no fragrance, and women no petticoats," is not less well known. It has been the singular fortune of this brief, collocation of words to be inserted in almanacs as a compendious account of a great Empire, and to be tited by grave Professors of Rhetoric as an example of "that kind of force which con- ciseness alone may create." It is not strange that those who derive impressions from sum- maries of this sort should be ready to believe that nothing about China can be too absurd to be

e true. And after all, there are enough singular things in connection with the Chinese, to serve the purpose of the most imaginative. A country where persons can be hired to do anything what-

ever, and where a certain minute fraction of the people do at times actually get their living by having their head cut off (in place of the rea! criminals), is a country in regard to which it would acem impossible to make predicates amiss. Be sides, it must not be forgotten that the number of Occidental travellers who visit China was never greater than at present. Many of them take extensive journeys, equipped only with that Intelligent ignorance which is adapted to gather and disseminate information in such a manner 25 to confound confusion. Of this class, apparently, is the author of the last item wo quoted; indeed, he not only visited Chins, but be "penetrated into the interior, so that his opportunities were exceptional

The individuale who compose the human race differ in many particulars, but they all have this in common, that they do not like advice and unanimously refuse to take it. If it were not for this fact, we should say to those who "penetrate
