statistics of lightning strokes in Germany daring the past twenty-six years have been investigated by Herr Kastner, who shows that the annual number of cases bas more than doubled in that time. Last year there were no fewer than 1145 strokes. They are most frequent in the hottest months of the year, June and July, and in the hottest hours of the day or those following them (from 3 to 4 p.m.). It appears that the thunderstorms proceed from the hills, and the parts of their course, most liable to be struck are woodless and flat places, vaileys of sivers, and low meadows, near lakes, while wooded and hilly districts generally escape. Mr. Francis pressed his application, although his lordship doubted if it would be of much use as worded, Messrs. Naudin & Co. having denied that the imitation was colorable.
His lordship asked who would be responsible if that were sustained?
Mr. Francis replied that Mesara. Stolterfoht and Hirst were the petitioners' agents here.

of the house. He found two papers in the house whereon was written dominoes played day and night." He found also another paper bearing characters meaning "Riches come straight, bad men are crooked."
After a brief cross-examination of the witness Mr. Pollock applied for a remand for a few days in order that he might bring certain witnesses for the defence, amongst whom was Lao Chung Chi, the true manager of the Club.
His Worship declined to accede to the request. This closed the case for the prosecution.
Taz To Lam, the first witness for the defence, said that he was a shareholder in the Man Wo Club, Outsiders, friends, could go in there and sit down at any time. Familiar friends could be taken in or go in there at any time, but the general public could not do so, by the rules. He had known Mr. Robinson's "boy" for some three months. Achung, the "boy" in question, had been to the Club two or three times, but was merely a friend of members of the institution. To bis Worship-On two occasions he took Mr. Robinson's "boy" to the Club-on the 29th ultimo and 1st instant. The Club had no book in which the names of visitors were entered. Outside friends were not allowed to gamble there. They could only sit down, talk, and take refreshment. When a friend was once introduced he could go to the club as often as he pleased. There was no regular form of intro- duction; it was only necessary to take him there to "chow," or something of that kind. It was the business of the head manager to see that none but the friends of regular members came in. Witness did not introduce, Mr. Robinson's "boy" to the manager. There was no evidence of the "boy" being introduced; perhaps the clerk had seen him some time. He met the "boy" accidentally when he (witness) came over from Huagham. He met bim in Queen's Road near No. 5 Station on one of those two occasions. The Club was started on the 28th of August of this year, and it had x1 members. Witness did not know how much each share cost, Witness's share was $70. The profits were divided in accordance with the articles of association. If a stranger, an unintroduced man, came in, he would have a cup of tea given him and be allowed to stay as long as he liked. Such a man could go in as often as he liked, but could not gamble. There were no so-called members in the club, there were only shareholders. Lao Chim Chu, the manager, lived on the premises in a room on the first floor.
Lao Chim Chu said he was the accountant of the Man Wo Club. As such he did not keep the register of shareholders. He did not know whether there was any list of members kept..
To his Worship-Shareholders look after the matter of keeping strangers from gambling. Strangers, if introduced by shareholders, could gumble. A visitor who had once been introduced by a shareholder could not come in unless accompanied by a member who knew him. If "a positive stranger came in they would ask blm to go, out. There were no profits in the club because the provision of dinners and the engagement of girls were very costly. The total capital of the club was $1,550, put together by 22 shareholders. Witness had only to keep the provisions account. He also took the gambling commission, which varied. A fantan they charged seven per cent., and at paikou four per cent, commission. Wong Sao Pao, the secretary, always paid the rent of the house, and was custodian of the gross receipts The prisoners were all shareholders in the club, but they had no special busiacas on the club premises.
Re-examined Shareholders usually paid extra for the use of their rooms and board.
Wong Shao Fan, secretary and manager of the Man Wo Club, said gambling was sometimes carried on in his place. The public could not come in and gamble there, though visitors could come in at any time and have a cup of tea if previously brought in by a shareholder, He produced the book (register) of shareholders. The prisoners, being shareholders, wore his friends. He knew them well; but did not know what commission was charged on fantán and boss" besides daikan. There was another himself in the club who looked after the coin, but did not keep the books. He (witness) kept the safe in his room. It was no one's special business to see that strangere did not enter. The "man on the stairs" was posted there to offer tea to visitors and kabitués.
Mr. Robinson's "boy," recalled, denied that he knew any of the witnesses for the defence, or that he had ever been introduced to the Club by them
Mr. Pollock, for the defence, submitted a rechauffe of Mr. Caldwell's arguments in the recent case that the gambling was common, He further urged that and not public. the information had been laid out of spite by an informer whose interest it, was to obtain convictions. Apart from his evidence nothing was shewn to have happened that could not have occurred at the Hongkong Club-a man went upstairs, and began to gamble, and so. long as he was well-conducted nobody said any. thing to him.
Inspector Stanton corrected the statement with respect to informers-none bad been paid by the Police for some months,
|
forthcoming. Although in the last decision be gave he stated that before a house could be proved to be a gambling house there must be evidence to shew that public gambling bad taken place in it, and not merely inferential evidence, which pointed to the presence of outsiders there, without proving that they had gambled, or could have gambled had they choace, he nevertheless felt a good deal of, hesitation and doubt in deal- ing with the present case. As usual, there weID. club rules, handsome furniture, account-books dealing with nothing but ordinary expenses, such as provisions, girls, and so forth, which books all the witnesses for the defence disavowed havläg any knowledge of, each saying that someone else kept them; still there was a shifty, uncertain tone about their evidence, which made its credibility. very difficult. The rules that were flaunted by the defence seemed to be merely kept to frighten the police, and were practically worthless. If the evidence for the prosecution was to be believed, no less than ten individuals unconnected with the club-of which there were only 21 "share holder," and no, members-were in the place on the night of the 10th instant, having gone there without the slightest restraint, and had gambled as freely as they chose. He was aware' that in certain details there were discrepancies in that 'evidence, but they were infinitely less than those in the evidence put forward by the defence. According to his view of the case—which he must admit might very possibly be wrong-he had no hesitation in saying that on the night in question that house was open for the purpose of public gambling, and that the prisoners were managing the games the profits of which supported the house. He' therefore found them guilty, and sentenced them each to six months' imprisonment, with hard labor.
|
The prisoners having been removed, and the Court nearly cleared

During the utterance of the last few words Mr. Wodehouse bastily put on his hat and vacated the Bench, leaving Mr. Follock to argue the matter out with a Chinaman.

ONE of the most noteworthy features of the fictitious "boom" in local properties, land, stocks, etc., which ended so disastrously last year, was the great and spontaneous spurt made to provide additional havens of rest and enter- tainment for local residents, and also for visitors to this part of the globe.
