So far as we can gather, the truth is that the book-keeper was stricken down with
and explained that, if they would hot take the usual wages, the Captain would assuredly ship Japanese, Mainys, or Manila, men. It was of no ase however. They held out then and hold out now. The whole of the sailors now in the "Home" (about forty men) are on strike for higher wages. Some of the leaders have upwards of sixty or seventy dollars, so they can afford to lay back for a month or two, but there are many among them who have but a very few dollars to the good, and these latter would willingly ship at once were it not for the moneyed leaders who prevent them from doing so. The latter see the folly of the movement, in view of the large number of Manila-menlaps and Malays who are now in Hongkong hanging about boarding houses in Taipingshan. There Asiaties are willing ship at any moment and John D. Brewer shipped a whole crew (her full complement of eight) of Japanese, at fourteen gold dollars for month; which is equivalent to Z3 sterling, approximately. If the men had, well-organized union, with plenty of funds at their back, say about $4,000 or $5,000, they then hold out for a very long time indeed-at would probably gain their point, for they could least sufficiently long to let all the Manitamen, Malays and Japs get shipped away; when they could, of course, get any reasonable increase demanded. As things are, however, the pro spect is bad for the men, because by local law, although the "Home" is security for the care, in cases of sickatas, of men for a perfod of six months after their discharge, still it is not bound to keep healthy able-bodied men who refuse to ship, and who may be daily getting deeper into debt with the institution.

It therefore follows that as soon as some of these men's funds have run out, they will have to ship. If, they persist in refusing to "ship" they must be turned away from the "Home" and will then, in that case, either fall into the hands of their respective Consuls or make intimate acquaintance with the Police; for large numbers of them are Scandinavians, Swedes, Danes, Norwegians and Firs. Scacely an American ship comes in here with more than one or two Americans or Englishmen on board.. They nearly all carry Scandinavians in prefer- ence. It is a fact that scarcely a skip sailing out of New York or Boston will take an English- man or an American if they can fill up their

If all the sailors who are paid off here every year, and they amount to over 8,000 per annum, were to pay a dollar apiece into the funds of a well-organized union, by this time next year they would have a good stock of the "sinews of war" in hand and be able, no doubt, to raise the standard of wages for far'ard "hands," but all they are accomplishing at present contributes to the advantage of men who are regarded as maritime parasites (Manilames, Malays and Japs), and to their own impoverishment. Ris strange fer can't see this. They are premature in the step they have taken, it is a farce without previous organisation. It can result in nothing but harm to themselves as things stand at present.
The men should look at matters" "straight in the face, and they would then see that the best they can do at present is to accept the truth of the adage "discretion in the better part of valour" and put off a demand for higher wages for a year at least. Meanwhile, possibly with a general rise now demand, and are vainly endeavouring to get, in freights all round, the increase of wages they will have been conceded voluntarily by ship
owners.
At the present time the 'Daniel. I. Tenney wants six men and, if Europeans won't go at the wages of the port, she will take Japs and, Malays.
As far as we can gather, the present strike derives interest only from its ridiculous nature-
wholly unorganized, and its collapse a foregone
conclusion from the start. In their own interests the men should have felt their way cautiously and made no demonstration until success was assured. They will have no one to thank, when the collapse comes a few days bence, but their own reckless leaders, who are trifling is a foolhardy manner with the best interests of a class of deserving men who are never too well treated, . It may seen hard to the men to have to ship for less in Hongkong thán in London, but to inaugurate reform in the manner new adopted, seems nothing short of culpable folly on the part of the leaders of the movement, whose, dictates should be utterly diaregarded by those who have the good of their profession at heart.
