LIU MING-CHUAN, Governor of Formosa, has been granted a manth's leave, of absence from his post, on the strength of a medical certificate. His Excellency, it appears, is suffering from an illness contracted whilst leading the Chinese "braves" against the aborigines. The Provincial Treasurer will be Liu's locum tenens.
The silk market was opened at Shanghal on June 21st at prices which, according to the N.. C. Daily News, alter allowing for the rise in exchange, make the silk cost about Tla. 30 per | picul more than last year.
WE heard from Shanghai the other day that Oscar Brandi had been removed to Her Britannic Majesty's gaol there, and placed under constant surveillance, as it was feared he might in himself teata that it has been decided to send him home or somebody else serious injury. We now by next German mail.
Mr. Francis, for the defendants, contended that no evidence had been adduced to shew possession by the bankrupt, or that the defen- dants had no right to stop the box in transitu.- The bankrupt's evidence at his examination was then read. He said that the box of gold was consigned to him by the defendants to purchase goods. He did not purchase the goods, us he was ankrupt before the gold arrived.

MINUTES.
If Mr. Taylor's assumption proves to be right, sums which should have been debited to Working Account, it will be clear that the Company's books have not been in order since 1886.
Mr. Taylor further stated that since the accounts came into his hands he had gone very
| carefully into the figures, and that there were, so many irregularities that he thought it would have been safer not to pass the accounts in the present form. I trust the Committee of Investiga. Taylor incorrect, but I doubt it, as everyone la tion may be able to prove the figures of Mr. Hongkong Knows that it has cost an enormous amount of extra time and labor to present the. accounts even in their present form.

I concur with Mr. Taylor's remark, that the Compary's affairs have been mis-managed from the first, there is now, however, hope that the Commitice of Investigation will change this mis- management into good management, which the Directors have not been able, or had not time to do, since the Company commenced business: I wonder if the Committee of Investigation, for doing something, will get a fee of $6,000 per annum !!

Mr. Ackroyd, Registrar of the Supreme Court, claimed delivery of a box contaiulog £230, on behalf of the estate of Chan Asub, bankrupt, the defendants being Lu Yun, trading as Aping and Co., Sydney-Mr. A. J. Leach (instructed by Mr. Mossop) appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. J. J. Francis, QC, (instructed by Mr. Reece) appeared for the defendants.
Mr. Leach, in opening the case, said that in effect it was an interpleader suit, brought by the Official Assignee against a firmi of Chinese mer- chants in Australia, on behalf of the estate of a bankrupt formerly trading as Wa Hing, tea and general merchant, at 56 Wing-lok Street. His Excellency mentioned that in 1888 the Council voted $50.00g for water pipes, which were orderal towards the end of last year, but which did not arrive until the beginning of this year, so that the amount voted could not be expended until re-voted. Out of the $50,000, however, the sum of $5,882 had been expended, and they were only asked to re-vote the remainder. By Mr. Chadwick's calculation the total cost of water-mains, etc, would be $120,000. . $80,000 had been already voted, and the sum now asked for would make up the amount.

In terms of the resolution passed at the general meeting held on 30th May 1889, the 25,00 vendors' shares received from the Selama Tin Mining Company, Limited, were dealt with as follows:
19,908 Shares distributed to shareholders in the

each share beld in this company, 3,750 Shares to W. V. Drummond, Esq., being
15 per cent of Vendors' shares per. agreement. 1,342 Shären set aside for the expenses of the
liquidation,

The 1,342 "Liquidation Shares" were realised, as the acounts show, at an average net price of 87.15 per snare.
