and managing the Customs here for the past four years upon the basis of a branch of the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs Service, is certain to object to this loan and the security,
Although Mr. Augustine Heard, the United States Minister, arrived here on the 6th instant, Mr. Dinsmore, his predecessor, has not ye taken his deputure. A couple of days ago Mr. Walber, the Russian Minister, got up a parting address for him which had six signatures (1) which presented with considerable ceremony and a good deal of gas and grovel. Mr. Secretary Blaine should make Dinsmore 'ante up this precious document, and pieserve it as a state papier.
Mr. Denny, judge, adviser, expectant minister plenipotentiary and envoy extraordinary, &

6th June, 1890. The King's grandmother died yesterday at the age of dy. She was the mother of the notorious Tai Wun Kun, Ex-Regint, who was kidnapped by the Chinese in 1882 and released in the spring of 1885. Of course the funeral will be a very. costly affair, with hired howlers etc., lo do the "too muchee solly pidgin.”
Another biu political row threatening. America has been intriguing to get a lease of Port Hamilton as a coaling station, and Japan and Russin would appear to have been privy to the job. Then, too, it has leaked out about the American-Japanese
of
loon to Korea $1,500,000. Yuan, the Chinese Resident, got scen! of the whole affair and kicked up a row as per usual. The result is that rumours are afloat of the intention of the British fleet to re-occupy Port Hamilton, and of Chinese vengeance, which have greatly excited the populace. The U.S.S. Swatara and a Japanese corvette landed fifty matites each yesterday, at Chemulpo, the port of the capital, and marched on Seoul, which they entered at sun-down and were quartered at their respective legations at once. This is very high- hahded action and particulars of their raison dire, in this connection, are awaited with much interest. As regards the Japanese it is very remarkable conduct, for in 1985 Count Ito signed a convention with Li Hung-changby which it was clearly laid down, that neither of the signatory Powers should ever land armed soldiers on Korean soil without giving each other a full months' notice, and also show cause in writing, for such-action. Of course this convention was of the usual ple-crust type meant to be broken as soon as it suited one of the contracting Powers to break through it and gobble up the contents, -and they both knew this. Japan will doubtless have to explain..
A big export trade is going on in beans and rice, which the Japanese are buying up in every direction. This is said to be owing to the failure of the crops in Japan last year.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 1890.
In addition to the above were the "Heron" nugget, worth $20,000, and the "Empress nugg t. worth $17,661.
Gold in dnft depa its has been found in larger masses in Australia than in any other Country. Many large, nuggets were found in California during the era of placer mining, but we have no record of any to compare with those we have described in Australin.
• THE MYSTERIES OF THE TEA TRADE.
At the Worship-street Police Court, London on the 9th day, Thomas Paget and Robert Pigott, trading as a dealers in Whitee apel, appeared to summonses under the Mercha, dise Marks Act charging them, with having sold or caused to be sold certain tea to which a false trade description had been applied, contrary to 50 and $1 Vict.. cap. 48. Counsel for the prose cution said that the prosecution was instituted by an association called the Ceylon Tea Growers' Association. The article sold was tea in packels bearing the brand of "The Sogama É tate." He said it was a fact that Ceylon tea bore a high name for quality in the market, and it was found that a great quantity of inferior ica was sold as Ceylon tea, not being such. It was true there was an estate in Ceylon called the Sogama Estate, owned by a company having offices in Clement's-lane, Lity. The association having ascertained that tea bearing the brand of "The Sogama Estate was being sold by certain per- sons, communicated with the company owning the estate, and these proceedings resulted. Mr. Avory, counsel for the defence, said that he was prepared to admit that the defendants applied the label and that it was not Sogama tea, but he could not admit that it was not Ceylon tea. He denied any intention at all to defraud, Mr. Bushby, in giving judgment, said the label Sogama Estale' tea distinctly misled the public, and that was a serious evil which must be put a stopito. He imposed a fine of £10, and allowed 255, cost.
Commenting on the above case The Times sys-Te is a subject of very general public interest. We fear, therefore, that there will be widespread dismay and surprise at the amount of mystery with which the tea tada is shown to be surrounded. The object of those engaged in it seems to be to keep everybody in the dark There are trade secrets at every stage. In dealing with the report, we must begin with the wholesale tea blender, since the case in couri does not carry us any further back than this He is, unquestionably, a man of mysteries How his mixtures are made, and at what originani c1st. he obtains the materials for making them, is his own private affair, and no one bui himself is to know anything about it. His customers, the retail tex grocers, are men of like mird. They do not wish the public to know where they get their teas, and accordingly they prefer packets which have no blender's name upon them. The blender, we need hardly say, is ready to accommodate thein in so simple a matter. But, however unwilling the defendants were to allow us a glimpse into their trade
What with foreign troops in the capital, disquieting ramours about Port Hamilton, China's brance the Customs' predicaments, Missionaries mobḥeipc, &c. we have a nice" kettle of fish"crets, there was more than one revelation
to took after now. Highly amusing no doubt, but very critical nevertheless. If peace, on a permanent basis, is the outcome of all this Bubbub, then it will indeed be a blessing to the unfortunate people of this country, and act as a check-mate to Russian, American and Japanese designs. Peace seems hardly possible just now fer, as I said before, latent possibilities forbid confidence in the immediate future.
THE LARGEST GOLD NUGGETS.
As the Punjom Gold Mining Company is said to be rapidly approaching the productive stage, and sanguine expectations are indulged in of nuggets as big as bricks being daily unearthed for the benefit of the long-suffering shareholders, some facts regarding the largest "chunks" of the precious metal that have ever been found will be devoured with avidity-especially by those who invested in Punjoms at 85.
The largest piece of gold in the world was taken im Byer & Hultman's gold mining claim, Hill End, New South Wales, on May 10, 1872. Its weight was 640 pounds, height 4 feet 9 inches, with 3. feet 2 inches, average thickngy 3 inches, worth $148.000. It was found emh died in a thick, wall of blue siate at adepth of 250 feet from the surface. The owners of the mice were living on charity when they found it.
Welcome Stranger" nugget was found on Mount Mollaged, February 9, 1869, weighed 193 pounds, ard was worth $45,600. This ngst was raffled at $45,000 at $5 a chance, and was won by a man driving a baker's
made in the course of the case for the prosecution. it was stated and it was not contradicted, that an offer had been made on the part of ore of the defendants to pay a royalty to the Sogama states Company for the right to use their labels. Now, such a tight as this would not need to be bought and paid for if the contents of the packets corresponded with the labels outside. We, come next to the quality and cost of the tea thus misdescribed. Choice Ceylon tea mixed with other choice growths is the blender's account of it. Inferior Indian and China te is the corrected statement en the part of the prosecution; with parlaps some Ceylon tea added, but more probably without any. We must leave our readers to choose between the two stories. They cannot both be true. There is one point of interest, on which Mr. Bushby sought to be informed, but
which the witness for the
on
prosecu-
Lion' could throw no light. Is it usul in the sea trade to pay a royalty for the right to well goods under the name of some one zise, and with no regard to the truth or falsehood of the description? Possibly, the more usual course is for the fraudulent label to uscil, with no money paid for it, and with no leave asked. The public, 9 a rule, knows very little about tea, and it can be put off, accordingly, with "ery indifferent stuff. The tipplers, as Mr. Goschen terms them, have a more formed taste. For tex, drinkers almost anything will do, and a long as this state of things continues there will be chops found from which they will be served with almost anything except, indeed, with good ten, fold frankly for
