MYSTERIOUS MURDER IN

BRITISH KOWLOON.

A brutal murder, supposed to have taken place in British Kowloon about a week go, has been discovered, the victim being a Chinaman 35 years of age, whose brdy was found in the ravine at the Folice shooting range at Tai-kok-tsui, about nine o'clock this morning, when a couple of Chinamen, who. happened to be crossing the range, suddenly came upon the corpse lying in a pool of water in the lower part of the ravine. They at once repaired to the Police Station and reported the matter to Inspector Matheson, who is now investigating the case. It is supposed that the man was one of the Chinese frontler guard, but the theory that he fell out with some of his comrades and was the victim of a gambling brawl appears to be very far-fetched, for the body, which now lies at the Mortuary, bears Fraces of terrible bruises and fearful gashes with sharp instrument, probably a sword. It has upwards of is deep incised wounds all over the body, one of them being a word thrust which entered the temple just above the left ear and pierced the skull, coming out at the back of the right ear. The body is hacked about in the most shocking manner,

even the nose being nearly cut off. As the police are very reticent about the affair it must remain, as far as the general public is concerned, a shocking mystery, until the inquest is he d on Monday next.

BOMBAY, May 20th,

A fire has been ranging for three days on board the B. I. S. M. Ca S.S. Siria, which arrived in harbour last evening from Calcutta, via Coast Ports. It seems that three days ago a fire was discovered to have broken out in the hold which contained a cargo of coir and cotton. Every effort was made to extinguish the con- flagration, but without avail, and doubts were entertained as to the vessel being brought to realised, for the hatches were battened down, her destination. These fears were not however, and the fire was thus kept, in a measure, in check.

LONDON, May 21st,

Of the Klukiang tens, the Ningchows are Inferior to last year's produce; while, on the other hand, Hohows have taken a step upward, and though by no manner of means a "level" crop, yet posscas in a marked degree the two qualities held in high esteem by American buyers quickness in hand," and the distinctive, but indescribable "Hohow" flavour.

But Keemuns are certainly the best of the Klangsi teas, caused, it is said, in some measure by the admixture of Tub Hing Moyune leaf And being both good and comparatively cheap, shippers of these kinds may look forward, with some ground of hope to favourable account sales. Again, should the inferiority of the Ningchows ultimately become more pronounced, London exporters may have to pay extr,me prices for; Keemuns for the Continental trade.

Sung-yang districts have received this season Hankow teas from the Yung-low-tung and what has been lost for years, a true Pekoe flavour, but the abnormal prices of Tis. 15 to 38 have put them quite out of the reach of English buyers.

The present stocks comprise some of the most ur desirable Ningchows seen for many a day, and much absolute rubbish in the Oonam and Oopack kinds : fit only for consignment to the all-devouring market of Shanghat..

There has been nothing in prospect or in the quality of the tea to justify this unprecedented rush. Every day has has been folly occupied with the duty of "collecting," Jor buying in the true sense has been entirely out of the question. Even "Sonday shines no sabbath day for the poor tea-laster. No one can deny that a system which admits of such heavy lossen being" made as those just recorded, that have given so severe a shock to the credit and position of the Bank, stands self-condemned, There must be something very lax in the banking system in India, which admits of big frauds of this kind being perpetrated on three banks almost simg taneously, when a few simple precautions, such as those taken in large banks in England, would have prevented their occurrence. Whether the frauds recently perpetrated in that Bank are duct to individual carelessness on to incapacity, thers is no doubt that a system which paste of being exercised without check of any kind is radically wrong and must be changed. He has, we understand, been ostracised from Hebrew society, and his pursuers have vowed to wreak their vengeance on him, and it is said that, were he to die, they would refuse him a Jewish burial. All sorts of rumours are afloat as to the speculative character of Solomon. Incumbent upon it to sift the matter to the very bottom. The Board of Revenue must explain if real partes did not go out of its office to enable Solomon to copy them for his purposes. The public wou'd like to have this and other equally important questions answered.

ני

The Pioneer writes:-Mr.Solomon, the gentle. man who has got himself into trouble with the Bank of Bengal, appears to be the identical person who so disturbed the public mind at the time of the issue of the Budget, by the extent of his acquaintance with the intentions of the Government, both as to the Imposition of the spirit duty and as to the non-issue of a rupes loan. In the latter case it seems quite as probable that Mr. Solomon acted upon a shrewd estimate of the general financial position by putting this and that together, as that he was in receipt of any specific information. As to the before through one of the Local Govern spirit duty, the clue had leaked out some time

ments consulted. But cleverness is often short- sighted. Not being a lawyer Mr. Solomon apparently overlooked a provision which deprived him of the advantage be had calculated upon in making a large purchase of spirits on the eve of the enhancement of the duty. The Custom Tariff Bill introduced last year in connection with the salt. duty, provides that in case of transactions taking place within one month of the enhancement of duty the buyer has to make good the difference to the seller, thus obliterating the profit of such speculations, Mr. Solomon / could only operate in spirits a short time before the duty was raised and he ce he over-reached himself As to his dealings in Government paper it is well-known that there were other influences abroad which prevented Sir David Barbour's announcement about the loan bring. ing about the rapid rise of price that might rind facis, have been reckoned upon. The rumour, current in Calcutta that Mr. Solomon cleared fifty four. Lakhs is, of course, an absurd exaggeration. The fact is that he can have made little over his speculation, as the margin. of profit was small and, bis operations only extended to fourteen lakhs,
