The relic was presented to McAuliffe by Barney Farley, and was worn with the best results by the Mission Bay in his battles with the Port Costá Giant, Poddy Ryan, and other short-haired sons of Anak. When Jos came to fight Peter Jackson the green sash was brought out of the wardrobe once more, and those who knew of its money with unshaken efficacy laid their

THE TRANSFERABLE TIGER,

This is a Corean tale, translated by Mr. W. G. Aston, G.M.G.:-

Once upon a time, a man was travelling along a road. Before him was a high mountain on the flink of which the road ascended steeply, while to the right and left grew flowers and trees of every kind and fragrant herbage covered the ground The fiying birds and creeping beats frolicked hiber and thither, from a jolty a pearly stream flowed forth and fell to the bottom of the mountain in a shower of ten thousand jewels. There the water collected into a large pond, on the brink of which an old fisherman was quietly sitting. He had laid down his thirty foot fishing-red and was singings song, while ontheother side a wood cutter whistled at his work. Charmed by the bound, and his mind. engrossed by the contemplation of the scenery, the traveller forgot the weariness of the journey and proceeded on his way, now resting, now singing on, for two or three, till on the left side of the road he perceived a narrow path, very steep and difficult. Wondering where this path might lead to, he seated himself on a rock to rest, when looking between the trees, he saw a tiger and a man standing face to face, Amar-d at this strange sight, he turned aside, for a few steps and, on more preciso examination, saw that a youth of twenty or more held a tiger firmly by the neck with one hand while with the other ho groped the branch of a large tree which stood close by. Observing their condition, he could see that the tiger's strength was exhausted
