A MAN in Illinois lately married his sixth wife. Every one of his wives brought him a farm, and he is now one of the largest landed proprietors in this country. This shows that marringe is n great success if it is managed properly, and tha if a man sticks to that business, as well as anj other, he is bound to come out ahead in the end. At that time, before the telegraph was dis covered, the Russians used signal stations which were a few miles apart. The soldier made a signal which. was repeated by the soldier at the next station, and thus the news was conveyed thousands of miles. One day a soldier at a station near St. Petersburg did not see the signal in time, and, dreading the punish. ment that awaited him for negligence, deliberate ly hanged himself on the signal tower. The soldier at the next statian mistook this fra signal, so he deliberately but promptly hanged himself, also. In consequence of the discipline' which prevail in the Ru's an army, cex day it was discovered that all the soldiers at the signal stations from St. Petersburg to Warsaw had
banged themselves on their signal towers. Of COUTEC much stricter díscipine prevails at present, and-" That will do," replied the German, "I give it up."
This smallest draft ever issued by the U.S.
Treasury Department will be drawn in the course of a few days, says the Chicago Herald. Itis for the magnificent sum of 1 cent, and is to pay for property worth, at the lowest estimate, $40,000. At the last session of Congress the representa Live from Lowell succeeded in having a bill passed appropriating $200,000 for the erection of a public buliding there and the purchase of the site. Half a dozen different property-owners were anxious to have the Government buy their property, as they thought it would be a good thing for them. The famous bunting mill, in which General B. F. Butler is such a large stockholder, own a large plot of ground near the mill, and offered it the Government for a very low price, thinking that if the Post office were built there the company's other property would enhance in value. Considerable property was owned by an estate at the other offered land equally as desirable. The contest end of the town, and for the same reason they between the two waged warm for a time, until at last the Butler people executed a master move and offered the property to the Government for $1. But the other syndicate heard what had been done and offered their ground for r cent, and this offer the Government finally accepted, and the draft for: cent will soon be sent to the agent of the owners. The same routine will have to be followed in regard to this draft as (1 it were for $1,000,000. All the papers will have to be carefully examined by the accounting officers in the first instance, and there be about fourteen signatures on the warrant before the draft is finally signed by the Secretary of the Treasury.

THE unpopularly of marriage, saya tḥe Poli Mali Gazetle, continues unabated, and last year was the first in recent times in which, while the
price of wheat fell, the marriage rate remained stationary. It is now 14.1 per thousand. The decline in the popularity of matrimony is greatest with those who bave already had some experie ence of wedded life. Between 1876 and 1888 the marriage rate fell 12 per cent for bachelors: and spinsters, 27 per cent. for widowers, 31 per cent for widows. The drop in the remar riage df widows, however, is probably due to the glutting of the marriage market with sur- plus spinsters. The excess of women over men in England and Wales is estimated at 765,000. Another interesting fact is that the bieths have now reached the lowest rate recorded since civil registration beran. In 1876 the rate was 363 per 1000; it is now 30.6. This is very satisfactory, and it is also notable that the illegimate birth rate bas declined, the propor tion, 4.6 per cent, being the lowest yet registered, The worst feature in the Registrar - General's return, however, is the fact that the male bittha bad fallen in prop ition to the female; in the last ten years "1038 baby boys were boin for every thousand girls, and last year the male preponderance had dropped by 5, and is standing at 1033 to 1003. With surplus female population of three-quarters of a million, this is a move in the wrong direction, It is worth noting that while the increase in marriages between Eng ish people has not kept pace with the population, (having increased only 4 per cent in the last nine years), marriages according to Jewish rites have grown no less than 65 per cent, If this rate is kept up wa shall become Anglo-Israelites indeed, in a way not dreamed of by those enthusiasts who have identified us with the last Ten Tribes.
