THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1890.

At this orisia Wade's Bootch blood asserted fiself. He refused to stand any more dosing, and told the. doctors that if he must die he could die as wall with- out them as with them. By this time a cup of milk would turn sour on his stomacb, and lie there for days, Our

friend from Glasgow, was like a wreck on shoal, that going to ples. We will let him tell the rest of his experience in the words in which he When I

communicated it to the pre He mys:

I was in this state & lady whom I had never soon it has been carried on by those favoured few | mehe me to the hospital and talked thor Ipod to be an angel of merer, for net now bo slire.

She told me who, by bribery, are allowed to "bring up the of a madicine called Mother Beigal's Curativo Byrup, rear of the tribute bearers in their annual

Red Ginseng has always been a próhibited export from which the King has derived but little profit, for the reason that large quantities of it have been smuggled out of this country Annually; and the so-called legitimate trade in

and

migrations & Peking. Now, however, by the me a bottle next day. I started with

wise measures adopted, or rather I should say, to be adopted, the treasury will net at least $200.000 per annum from this source alone, while the duty on Red Ginseng is sufficiently high to smaintain the proper value of such a highly- prized commodity. By the opening of Ping Yang, too, trade, and consequently revenue, should receive a great fillip. Again, the chief imports to Korea consist of Manchester goods (shlilings, Hawns, clc., which form the chief article of clothing for the whole nation. It is therefore clear that the new rules will favour an increase of British trade with this country, while the Japanese and Chinese merchants-who are but distributors of the great importers in China and Japan-will be able to ply their trade with renewed activity. I presume that China will have no difficulty in obtaining for her merchants the same concessions as are, it appears, to be conceded to those of Japan. Ever since the opening of Cores to foreign trade efforts have made to induce this pig-headed Government to allow the export of Red Ginseng ; but all attempts have hitherte failed. It will indeed be with laurels, that His Excellency Kondo will return to his native land if the ratifications of this Reciprocity become, as I believe they soon will, un fail accompli, And I shall not be surprised to hear that the Emperor has, in due course, decorated his indefatigable and able' representa- tive,Chinese Times.

THE ARIZONA KICKER.

We extract the following items from the last issue of the Arizona Kicker:

|

Another Cut-We desire to announce to the readers of the Kicker that we have made another cut in the price of bar-soap, and for the next two weeks shat offer six bars for a quaster. This is ope bar ahead of anything yet offered west of Chicago, and, while it brings the profit' way down to zero, we expect to reap some little bonor" from our enterprise. The grocery which we run in connection with the Kicker is coming rapidly to the front, and it is only a question of a few | weeks when it will stand of the head. Our

The above facts are calmly and Impartially stated, and the reader may draw his own conclusion. We doom it best to use ne names, although Mr. Wade gave them in his original deposition. His address is No. 244, Stoboross, Street, "Glasgow, where letters will reach him. -dɗrt]

He Was Correct-There was considerable astonishment exhibited by our people the other day when the Governor of Arizona look hands with us in front of the Post-office, and we have noticed a considerable change is the demeanor of certain people towards us ever since. The Governor was correct. We are no clam-shell hidden in the drifts, and he appre ciates the fact. He knows and respects the power of the press. He knows that a great paper like the Kicker, having behind it, but under one. And the same root n grocery, feed store, butcher shop, harness-shop, grockery store and gent's furnishings, must wield a mighty Influence for good.

The prople in this burg who have been look. fig upon us as a-t-mule power had better get their eyes open.

Came to Grief- The suit of the Widow Gibbs against us for breach of promise, damages $15 000, came up in court last Friday. The suit was instituted six months ago by the Court House ring, which has sought our downfall ever since the first issue of this paper. That is, they put the widow up to sue us, and bare advanced the money as it was needed.

When the widow was pat on the stand, she testified that on the night of February 21, 1887, we asked her to marry us. She in- sisted that the date was correct, and that nothing could change her mind about it. We then exhibited the records of the Jail to prove that on that day and night we were a prisoner, having, as some of our readers may remember, departed from the line of virtue and gone on a bender. This exhibit knocked the widow out in the first round, and confounded her supporters, and we don't believe they will tackle us again after that fashion.

As for the widow, she was only a cats paw, and we have sent to her house a basket of groceries, a clothes-line, a set of cups and saucers, and a sack of flour to prove that we hara no malice.
