BRITISH NORTH BORNEO.
1st December. 1889.
We note that the sailing vessel Kajakawa which recently made two trips up the Kina- batangan River laden with attaps, has been dismantled and now list off the China Borneo Co's saw-mill wharf, being in use as a receiving hulk.
We learn on good authority that the purchaser
of the whole of the Banguey tobacco crop, for which he paid 2/5 per pound, has resold it at -2-11-per-pound. In consequence, the German Borneo Co., are preparing to open one hundred fields in Banguey next year.
By the steamer Patnam, which arrived here on November 18th, Mr. J. J. Dunn, Managing Director in London of the British Borneo, Trad- ing and Planting Company, was a passenger, having come out to make a general inspection of the progress of the timber works and plant- ations.
Official information has been received that H.M.
Ships have received orders that the British North Bornco fing is to be saluted with 21 guns in future. This recognition of British North Borneo by the British Government as an independent State will strengthen the position of the Company's Government in many ways.
Captain Craigie, of H.M.S. Hyacinth, under took while in port to demolish the "Memnon " rock. This was successfully accomplished on the
afternoons of the 27th and gath November by the ship's divers with dynamite and gun cotton, and so Constant source of danger to the ship ping has been for ever removed.
The new. Hotel site is rapidly progressing One of the land marksefold Sandakan has lately disappeared in the shape of the house lately occupied by Mr. F. Bayley, and which in the old days was the residence of Captain Connor, R. N. Port Master. The soil taken away has made a road across the gully between Mr. Skertchly's residence and the "Barn." Mr. Sampson's late residence has also been obliterated.
Mr. N. Tone was a passenger to Sandakan by the Banjermassin which arrived on the 18t November. Mr. Tone has joined the Land Office in Sandaken as Chief Surveyor. Mr. Tone's career as a surveyor began in New Zealand in the beginning of the year 1873, when Zanned the badet, and he was placed on the list of authorized surveyors on the 4th June, 1877, since which time he has served under the Surveyor General for the New Zealand Govern- ment, latterly as district surveyor at Napier.
The China-Borneo Co's, steam launch Nor. manhurst left Sandakan on the 24th instant with about 130 menfor the Lamag Planting Com- pany's Estafe which is situated a little below Sibongan. Mesars, E. E. Abrahamson, James Fockens, the manager of the Lamag Estate, with his assistant Mr. Broser, were passengers. The
Normanhurst experienced no dificulty in reaching so bigh the Kinabatangan River

CHINKIANG.
December, 16th 1889. through Chinking on his way up the river on His Excellency Chang Chihitung passed' Saturday: The Kiangkwan remained at the hulk all day to allow the Viceroy to go ashore and visit Golden Island and other places. The Chinese officials paid their respects, but Chang was so busy that he could not appoint a time to receive the Consuls. The steamer was not allowed to discharge cargo until 9 a.m. on Saturday, lor fear of distu bing the great man's repose, The departure for Nanking was not made until night, when, amid the rastling and banging of musketry and cannon,
will in future call at Melipi, Bilet, Koyah, Bitu Puti, and the Lamag Estate on her usual trip.
Mr. Thomas Morgan, a coal miner, arrived at Landak on the 23rd November in the steamer Banjarmasin. Mr. Morgan has been engaged by the Syndicate formed by Messrs. Bogaardt and Abrahamson to work the coal mining concrasion granted by the Government which | includes a large portion of the East Còist. – Mr. | Morg n. in company with the Commissioner of Lands, Mr. Henry Walker, has visited the various outcrops found by Mr. Walker near Sandakan and considers the show, extending as it does over soms three quarters of a mile, affords fair hopes of ultimate success. We hope the operations to be conducted by Mr. Morgan will prove that a paying coal field ex'st, -Herald.

It was a drase event, as your Chinese (THE correspondent from this port would express it.
There is considerable suffering among the poor in this district, but the wheat and bean harvests were plentiful this year, and this will keep the farmers alive until spring. Great numbers of refugees have been passing through Chizkiang for more than a month. The rice kitchen will probably be opened on the feast of the winter solstice. Two ghasily murders have recently been committed among the Chinese which shows the existence of desperate robbers in the vici-
