William Allingham was born at Ballyshannon, Ireland, where his family, originally English, had been settled for many generations. After con- tributing to several periodicals his first volume of pocins was published in rigo, He edited Fraser's Magazine for several years, to which he contributed many articles in prose and verse. He published several volumes of poems, the latest of which, entitled "Blackberries," appeared in 1884.

REMOVAL OF OLD CEMETERY.

HE Old Colonial Cemetery, at Wàn-trai, is The above Colony, having become sur rounded by a dense population of Chinese of the poorer classes, it is found difficult to keep it in a condition of decency and cleanliness; IT 15 THEREFORE NOTIFIED that it is proposed re- verently and decently to remove all monuments. and tombstones in such Cemetery, as well as all remains which may be found there, to the existing Colonial Cemetery in the Happy Valley, where such remains will be re-interred.

The monuments will be repaired and grouped round a plain memorial stone on which it will be stated from what part of the Colony they have been removed.

Survivors, friends, or relatives who may desire to mak any objection to this removal, are re- quested to address the Colonial Secretary of Hongkong within six months from this date.

A list of the remaining monuments is ap- pended.

The Portuguese Republicans are greatly elated at the success of the Republican coup d'etat in Brazil, and there are mutterings of distant thunder which are beginning to confirm the belief already expressed that something of the same nature may be attempted in this country Portugal is about ready for a revolution, and slogularly enough the conditions for it are very similar to those which existed in the South American empire a few days ago. Considerable fear exists that bloody scenes may be enacted if the Republicaris make up their minds to

The latest news from Rio de Janeiro in refer- ence to the revolution in Brazil states that the Government of the new Federal Republic presented the Emperor, Dom Pedro, on leaving for Europe, with a sum of £80,000. The Government will allow him a pension of £80,000 year, and will continue the usual allowance to the Imperial family.

The censorship exercised over the press at Rio de Janeiro has prevented the truth as to the out- break of the revolution from being divulged. There is an impresssion, however, that the revolt was brought about by reason of the favour shown by the Imperial party towards the priesthood,
