He was as soon as practicable conveyed to the ST. JOHN Leper Hospital, which is an annexe of the Small- pox Hospital. The leper colony there now num- bere eleven persons. There are supposed to be several more lepers at large in the State. The leper colony that is now slowly increasing is the third of the series. Two have already been rooted out, one after another, and their members sent to China, where they belonged. We have been doing all that was possible to prevent the contamination of the blood of the American people. But in the nature of things the work cannot be done as completely and thoroughly as it ought. Lepers will remain at large for a long time before they are discovered. Articles have at times appeared in Eastern papers in which the tales of leprosy among the Chinese were described as Hoodlumesqo inven- tions. The unvarnished facts are the deportation already of two leper colonies collected city, while a third is now fast developing. We have not heretofore enjoyed all the sympathy from our Easter brethren, which this desperate struggle with the most loathsome disease to which bumanity is subject,, should have excited. But now that London has been scared almost out of its wits by the discovery of a single leper in its midst; that many Eastern cities have been thrown into the greatest alarm by the unearthing of Chinese similarly afflicted, the distressing work tolled over on San Francisco for many years past, in her efforts to prevent this terrible malady from gaining a foothold

among us, will be more thoroughly and generally appreciated.
Leprosy is the gaunt spectre which follows in the footsteps of Chinese immigration. Cases of leprory are found wherever they gain an entrance, There are now lepers in Australia, in Peru, in Cuba and Brazil The New York Sun says that several lepers have been discovered at Key West by Dr. Berger, and that there are forty-two at New Orleans. We all know the dreadful fate that has fallen on the Sand- wich Islands from this cause. Dr. Morrow recently read a paper before the Academy of Medicine-at-New-York-in-which-be said he found in the Sandwich Islands "the most abundant and conclusive proof of the extreme contagiousness of the disease." The two leper colonies previously deported from this city were exclusively.composed of Chinese. We are con- fronted with the startling fact that three of the third that is now gathering are whites. The dread disease is falling upon our people, Dr, Marrow calls in ringing tones for the passage of a law to rigidly exclude lepers. But leprosy in many cases develops years after arrival. There is no way to exclude leprosy but to exclude the people who bring it with them. If we cannot

There is no doubt that the diseases which are peculiar to this race, are spreading as fast as their vices. The prevalence of small-pox for so many years in various parts of the world is traceable to the outward movement of the uncasy Chinese masses. Previous to that time European science had almost stamped out that horrible disease. Congresss will assemble In a few months, There will to be a new bill introduced on the Chinese. question. It is the duty of the delegation to formulate There is not the least, use in tamper- The Scott ing with the question any more. Exclusion Act set aside one part of the Treaty of 1880. The next Act abould dispose of the remainder. So long as any class is admitted, the excluded class will masquerade in the clothes of that class. There is no way to keep out the Chinese but to exclude them all. If the corrup tion of the blood of our people is to be prevented, to say nothing of the other evils, which the immigration of this alien and unassimilable race entails, this ultimate and final step will have to be taken-San Francisco Bulletin.-
