for the first half hour at least, had the greatest difficulty in making runs. Six wickets were down for 25 runs, and it seemed quite likely that the bowlers, backed up as they were by smart felding, would continue to have the best of it; but at this juncture Stewart was joined by Wickham, and the partnership of these two practically decided the match. Stewart kept up bis wicket while his partner bit, and the pair added 25 rons, exactly doubling the score, before Wickham was run out. Of this number he had contributed 19, including no less than cight a's, by resolute hitting just at the time when it was needed. Crawford obtained the remaining runs and Shanghai won, as stated. It is worthy of note, as illustrating the excellence of the bowling and fielding, that an hour and a half was occupied In obtaining SS runs. Had Hongkong possessed a second bowlet capable of keeping a good length, it is quite likely that the visitors would have won. Coxon bowled admirably, but Sercombe-Smith sent down a number of badly- pitched balls which gave Wickham opportunities to hit.
On the whole, there can be no doubt that the better side won. The great weakness of the Hongkong team was in bowling; a second man as good as Coxon would have made vast difference. In the batting there was a distinct "tail"; but no fault could be found with the fielding, which was smart and occasionally brilliant. Coxon captained his team with great judgment, and the same may be said of Bruce. Robertson. The Shanghai captain, too, kept wicket admirably, without a long stap, and gave only two byes in the two innings. The Novoe Vremyo, in an apparently inspired article, declares that Russia has finally renounced her policy of unrequited complaisance towards Germany,
The trials of the new American cruiser, the Peruvius, continued on Wednesday with great success. Each pneumatic gan threw fifteen shells and six thousand pounds of dynamite the distance of a mile. The whole operation occupied but seventeen minutes.

A banquet was given in Liverpool on Monday to the President and Ex-President of the Iridian National Council.
Mr. W. S. Caine, M. P., was present and made an extraordinary speech, in which he denounced the exclusion of natives from a share in the Government of India, and eulogized the vernacular press.
The Earl of Galloway was put on his trial at Bumfries Session charged with indecently Rsulting a little girl named Gibson, eleven years of age.
The child in her evidence, testified to the an sault, which she alleged was committed whilst she was gathering blackberries with some com- panions. These confirmed the child's story, but Mrs. Moffat, the chief witness for the prosecution being called, admitted calling Lord Galloway a dirty blackguard," and her testimony differed somewhat from that of the children.
Lord Galloway's defence was that he simply helped the girl over a wall to enable her to gather blackberries."
After hearing counsel, the presiding Judge summed up, and the jury returned a verdict of Not Guilty," and the accused was accordingly acquitted.
