We note by Bombay papers of the 11th ulto. that Surgeon Gimlet, who was to have accom- pained the Anglo-Chinese Mission, which was to have left Simia on the 18th of last month, changed his mind at the last moment, and had to be replaced. We fear the name was too suggestive fr some of the members of the Mis sion, more especially in a country where the mosquito is said to possess such abnormally penetrative faculties.

"Is Shanghai Afraid ?" asks the Afercury, of the 1st inst. The querist continues:We hear that the Hongkong cricketing team, not being able to get away from bere until Sunday, have sent a formal challenge to the Shanghai Cricket Club to play one-Innings 'return' match to-morrow, but we understand that for some inscrutable reason the Captain of the home team refuses to take up the gauntlet. What is the matter? Is Shanghal afraid! It looks more than unkind not to give them the opportunity of having their revenge, and we hope that the committee will decide to night to get up a team to play the Hongkong men, and even, if neces y, to trot out their "feebles" or "duffers."

THE following "Rescript" of His Excellency. the Governor with reference to the Bankruptcy translation of which appeared in our columns a short time since-is advertised in the native papers, which, translated, runs thas:That the matters referred to in the petition' are of con- siderable importance I can clearly understand and do not hesitate to say, so: hence it is requisite that carly attention should be paid to the cradication of all faults and errors connected with the law in question. It is my firm inten- tion to consider upon the best methods for remedying them on behalf of the petitioners and to pass A

ordinance on the matter at an early date. Government at present, however, has urgent matters of State which demands its close attention. At a later date, when there is time, immediate attention will be given such as the importance of the subject demands. This subject, indeed, is one of considerable difficulty, and the educated will understand me when I say that the power of confirming such laws lies in the hands of the Parliament of Gecat Britain, and that the difficulty nl success is even greater aban appeats at first sight,
