The soil may be in proper condition when the seed is planted, but the weather which follows may be too wet, which will cause the seed to rol; or it may be too hot and dry, which destroys the germ before it shows itself. The soil may also be unfavourable for the variety of seed planted. And inatly, the seeds may be and are frequently destroyed by vermin of various kinds. of acting and the following is the result:

Probably each amount is not great, so the principal if he does find it out and ventures to remonstrate, is generally told "the matter is finished and I have nothing more to say,” and rather than go to the expense of Inw he allows the broker to stick to his plander, 3.-The aggregate amount made in a year by the brokers under the above system is very large.

A QUESTION OF INNOCENCE, Dr. Ho Kai, instructed by Mr. Ho Wyson, appealed on behalf of Chan Ahol against a con viction by Mr. Wodehouse in March last, The prisoner was sentenced to six months' imprison ment for receiving Lieut. Seatt's watch and sing from a thief, and was released on pending this appeal. Dr. Ho Kai reviewed nothing to indicate to the appellant that the there was thief, who was Lieut. Scout's boy was not a proper person to possess such a watch and ring As to the fact that a monogram was on the back of the watch, and an English inscrip tion inside, such property was not uncommon amongst Chinese.
The Chief Justice did not call upon the Attorney-General to reply, as he did not think there was any ground for any appeal at all. HP then briefly recapitulated the facts of the case, which were that on the 1st February Lieut." Scott's "boy" went to the appellant's house and lost $16, gambling, then went to the Barracks returned and stole his master's watch and chalo and stole $40, which he also lost, and afterwards and ring on which, he raised $46, only to lose that. The watch, which was worth ago, had a monogram on it, and the ring was not such as Chinese wear. The fact that the appellant only advanced one-sixth of the value of the property was suspicions. The argument that there was so direct evidence as to the "boy" having stolen it was nothing there seldom was more than circumstantial evidence. It seemed to his lordship that there was evidence cient to justify the magistrate in convicting, and the conviction would be sustained.
