In a subsequent effort to lower this record he again turned the Cleveland track in z.iz, but as this was a losing performance it was not generally heard of At Hartford, on the same day he was distanced, he showed a quarter in 30 seconds, a 2.02 gait, and undoubtedly the fastest bit of trolling ever seen, He was timed by Charles Backman, D. de. The general course of trotting matters during CHINA COAST METEOROLOGICAL the year has evidenced a decided growth of the popular interest in this field of sport. The volume of traces has increased largely, and, while a few tracks have dropped out of the swim, a great number of new ones have given meetings. In the South, the increase has been especially marked. Cities like Richmond, Nashville and St. Louis have had thoroughly gond meetings, and horsemen from all sections of the country have been attracted to these points. The move. ment in this direction is full of significance. It. means that the trotting interest is experiencing a healthy growth, and that within a few years the Southern States will appreciate it in a way to make it truly national. Of all sportsmen in the world, however, those who follow the trotters are the most conservative. The methods in vogue when Lady Suffolk was the foremost of living trotters still hold the first place in theit affections, and anything that is an innovation is looked on with distrust. The great success of the running races in the suburbs of New York, as compared with the trotting races in the same region, naturally drew the attention of the gentlemen interested in the latter phase of sport to the consideration of the reasons that caused such diverse results. Satis- fied that the public, 'which must, ultimately be The bay mare Rosalind Wilkes, owned by looked to for the sugport of any kind of racing, Sire Brothers of the city, was by the record desired the opportunity to bet, and to bet often, second among the trötters of the year. She is with a quick decision in view, the Driving Club by a son of George Wilkes and from a daughter of New York gave a inceting last fall in which of Zilcaadi Golddust. She was a sensation last each race was decided by a single heat. The year, bursting upon the trotting world like anmeeting was reasonably successful, though unexpected comet. She is amare of great speed, handicapped by bad weather and by other and is so strongly muscled that she is liable causes, but the idea seems to have 'taken root, to accomplish almost anything in a contest and similar meetings, under more favorable against time. Her career this year has not been auspices, seem likely to be given next season, Hongkong Observatory, 9th February, 1889. a pronounced success, but she has to contend more fully to test the merits of the idea. against such phenomenal trotters as Guy, Prince Wilkes and Favonia, and under these conditions she won, a large share of her races, and closed the season with a record of 2:141, made at Poughkeepsie against her stable com- panion, the pacer, Gossip Jr.
Perhaps the most successful trotter of the year was the big young gelding Prince Wilkes, by Red Wilkes, dam by Brown Chief. As a five- year-old be might have won the great $10,000 purse at Hartford in 1816, and this year nothing in reason could beat him. He started nine times and won eight races. His only defeat is credited to Guy, whom he beat handsomely at Detroit, and he is generally regarded as the best and most successful performer of the year. Big as he is he seems to stand campaigning and to be a better horse each year than the year before, He closed the season with a record of 2:14).
Favonia, by Wedgewood, dam Fadette, by Alexander's Abdallab, commenced the season with a record of a 19. She was one of the grand performers of the year, and won eight "races against the best horses on the turf, reducing her [record to 2:15 in a fourth heat. She bad a comparatively easy season, too, and great things are expected of her next year,
Harry Wilkes, record 2:131, did not start during the year. He is, by the record, second only to Guy among the trotters that are considered as on the turf. He was out of shape during the past season, and though his infirmity was con- sidered trifling his owners were not satisfied to start him, and late in the year placed him under the care of a prominent veterinary where he remains but with every promise that next year, he will be better than ever,
Clingstone, record 2:14, known in the past as the "demon trotter,? has done but little this year. He won a handsome victory, from Belle Hamlin at Buffalo, but was not obliged to go faster than 1:17.
Patron, record 2:14); won two beats from Prince Wilkes at Detroit, trotting one of them in 2:15, but lost the race, and late in the season was again defeated by the same almost invincible troiter.

In fact, the methods of conducting trotting races are in a transition state. The old methods no longer satisfy the public, but the proper sub. stitute for them has not been found, or if found, has not been tested in a satisfactory way. Something to prevent tedious scoring and to inspire the public with at least an approach to confidence in the honesty of the conduct of the races, and some means to give the public more liberal opportunities for betting than the old systems have offered, is evidently necessary. The attempt of the Driving Club of New York was in this direction, but was hasty and in some respects not well advised.
.•
During the past season the general super- vision of matters connected with the trotting turf has been under divided authority. Last year the American Trotting. Association was formed, and in a manner similar to that, of the old National Trotting Association, with which it has divided the allegiance of the various tracks, has settled disputes and enforced the turf laws, The working for the same ends, have apparently accomplished their objects very success- fully, for there has been a

He won other races in such time as proved that his speed stayed with him. But the event of the year for the Pacific coast was the successive lowering of the two-year-old record. In October, 1881, Governor Leland Stanford's hay filly Wild Flower, by Electloneer, dam Mayflower, by St. Clair, had fixed the mark for two-year-olds at 2.21, and until this year it had not been closely approached, though the attempt to surpass it bad been frequently made: On the 19th of October last the bay filly Sunol, by Electioneer, dam Waxana, by General Benton, performed the feat, trotting the Bay District track, at San Francisco, in 2.201. Hardly had the delighted astonishment subsided at the news this great performance excited, when, on a second attempt the same filly trotted, to rule, and for a record, in 2.18. The breeders who favored a strong like me to give you, infusion of thoroughbred blood in the trotter hailed these events as strongly supporting their theory, as Waxana, the dam of Sunol, is a daughter of Waxy, a thoroughbred mare by Lexington.
