A VERY funny scene occurred in the Central Police Station a little before noon to-day. A crowd came up to the Magistracy from China town, and as they stopped at the gate a little wizened old woman, something over four feet high, emerged, firmly grasping the queue of big young coalie, who laughed shamefacedly as she marched him excitedly to the railing. She still stuck to his back-hair as she told the highly amused assembly how she had lent him $4 and how he wouldn't her pay back, yanking his head down occasionally to emphasize her words. He said he had repaid her son she, with a vicious Jerk, said he hadn't. The average jut would doubtless remark that Miss Crisp has entered the bonds of matrimony-not being the Average ijut, we forbear. The local paper gushes over the "sweet simplicity" of the affair. Some of the following particulars, are culled from the journal in question:. On the marriage morn the lady went about her official duties as usual, poul- ticed this patient, blistered that, gracefully applied a leech here and the stomach-pump there. Then she measured the various boluses. It may be she was slightly more profuse with the Epsom salts and hubarb-mixiure than usually, and that her hand trembled with generous emotion as she gurgled out the cod-liver-oil, otherwise this heroine evinced no emotion. When she was through with the diurnal pills and plaster she tripped lightly into the hospital ambalance, and was "tooled by a festive grave-digger to the mortuary chapel, where the nursing staff in beavy marching order, and carrying bouquets of camo mile Bowers and dandelions, together with most of the undertakers off duty, bedizened with funeral wreaths, awaited her. Most of the consuming markets have been active during the year; and the results of ship. ments are therefore unusually good.
Outstanding shipments are moderate, and the proceeds will, it is estimated, fully cover the amount of this asset.
In consequence of the decaying condition of many of the wooden beams in the East Point and Bowrington Refineries it was decided to replace them by iron ones, and advantage is now being taken of the stoppage for annual overhaul to carry out the work, the estimated cost of which in about $10,000.
The General Agents regret that there is no immediate prospect of resuming work at Swalow with any advantage.
