THIS morning Mr. Wodehouse, with a Chinese jury, held an inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Kwong Yat San, a billiard marker at the Hongkong Club, who was found drowned on Monday morning. Mr. Clerihew, Inspector of Nuisances, said that about 6 o'clock on Monday he found the dead body of a China man at the mouth of the Sai-ing purr Nullah. The face was in about six inches of Water," There was a slight mark on the nose.-A billiard. marker at the Hongkong Club said the deceased was about twenty-five years of age, and had been employed at the Club over a year. He was at the Club on Sunday night, and seemed all right. He was missing next morning-án open verdict was returned.

WE are glad to observe that the recently started Polo Club is displaying unexpected vitality, and showing promise of becoming a popular institu- tion in our limited world of sport. Thanks to the energy of Capts. Collinson and Fletcher, ably seconded by several civilias and military lavers of the game, matches about twice a week have regularly taken place, providing excellent sport and attracting considerable attention from the public. The ground at Causeway Bay is scarcely all that could be desired, but it never- theless answers the purpose fairly well, and in a short time the reclaimed swamp in the Happy Valley will be available for this and other manly. sports: As will be seen from a notice in another column the Hongkong Polo Club intend holding a meeting on the 6th inst., which ought to prove a thoroughly sporting affair. The programme of events is a varied one and being a novelty to this colony should prove a great attraction to spectators. It will also be seen that the Jockey Club has given a Cup for a race confined to band de polo ponies, to be run on the "Off-Day at our rapidly-approaching annual racing carnival, YESTERDAY morning, in cold, wet weather, between thirty and forty Volunteers; under Major Tripp, Major Hawkins, Capt. McCallum, Licuts, Woolley, Holmes, and Denison, with Surgeon-Major Cantlie, went over to Stone culters' Island for their annual big gun practice, They formed into two companies, under Lieuts. Woolley and Holmes, and exercised with the 64-pounders at ranges of about eleven hundred yards. The men fired two shots each, and the shooting was unusually good, the target a beer- barrel on a floating platform, with a flag on the top-being hit by one of the three sighting shots fired by Major Tripp and Capt. McCallum, and two other barrels, constituting the reserve supply, being smashed during the afternoon. After tiffin, which was provided in a tent on the ambulance corps through their drill, and Mrs. lower beach, Surgeon Major Cantlie put the Cantlie presented badges to those who had made themselves efficient--some twenty in number. The shooting scores have not yet been made up,

but it is satisfactory to know that the ma:kman- ship all round was so accurate,

THE following news of a recent engagement between the French forces and the rebels in Tonquin is published by the Courrier d'Hai phong: According to information received at Hanoi on the zoth ulto, the column under.com- mand of General Borgnis Desbordes discovered the enemy on the 17th, above That-nguyen. They were Chinese, who bad fortified themselves in a very good position from which they resisted the attack of our troops for six hours. The combat which had commenced at eight in the morning lasted till two in the afternoon. During this time the enemy withdrew from post to post for a distance of 6 kilometres, followed by out troops who did prodigica of courage marching against an invisible foe who, sheltered behind the rocks fired leisurely and with great precision. Our losses, were considerable,-one officer killed, Captain Gardère and six other officers wounded, 12 men killed and 60 wounded. Our success cost us.dear, but it will bave produced the desired effect in demoralizing the Chinese column; they must have retired, and are now probably being attacked at Cho-moi. This will bring about the pacification of the region, Borth of Thai-nguyen.'

The Pope has written a cordial letter to the prelates in ireland in each of the Irish cathedrals,

King Humbert has accepted the resignation of Signor Magliani, Minister of Finance. Signor Grimaldi has been appointed Minister of Finance, Signor Miceti Minister of Agriculture and Signor Perazzi Minister of Public Works. The changes indicate Premier Crispi's desire for a coalition of the parties that accept his programme.

LONDON, December 29th. To-night's theatrical event, the revival of "Macbeth" at the Lyceum, differs in many respects from the production of the play at the same place ten years ago. Then it was a failure; now it is a success. The scenery and realistic stage effects are nearly perfect. One feature, the flight of sixty witches through the air and vanishing amid unearthly shrieke, was, extremely weird. The witches caldron was hewn out of solid rock. The banqueting scene was a triumph of stage splendor, and the costumes were strikingly picturesque,

Miss Terry's Lady Macbeth was marked by originality of treatment. It was a creation and her triumph was complete. Irving's Macbeth is full of soul and character. A striking feature in his make-up was the fact that he was beardless and wore a flowing red mustache like that of the Scandinavian hero. Miss Terry 'were long red hair in plaited tresses. In the sleep-walking. scene she was robed in long gown of creamy white wool kuitted. The house was crowded

LONDON, December goth. The police have received and traced to their origin letters which lead them to believe that "Jack the Ripper" is living in the vicinity of Drury Lane. They do not accept the theory that the Whitechapel fiend, had anything to do with the murder of litle John Gill, at Bradford, and seem confident that the clew upon which they are now working will result in the murderer's capture in London.

The resumption of the Gweedore evictions has been fixed for January and. Troops and police have been ordered to Gweedore on January 1st, and hold themselves in readiness to assist in enforcing expulsions on the following day.

San Jose de Costa Rica was the scene on December 29th and 30th of a series of earthquake shocks. At Alaguela eight persons were killed and many injured.
