A CONTRAST AND A STUDY,
IV..
THE INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE INTRINSICALLY CONSIDERED.,
{Continued)
IMPERFECT NOTION OF ENE DETY, The second, or ma e advanced, stage of the Jewish conception the Godhead is the Mosaic nation. The Egyptians were in a comparatively superior stage of intellectuality and civilisation than their Jewish captives. Moses, highly educated man, improved upon the original family God of Abraham, and the notion of the "Godhead, as the biblical history proceeds, becomes gradually purer and loftier, Still, Moses' idea of God involved by, implica tion the belief in the existence of ulher gods over all of whom he placed Jehovah, Who is like unto Thee, Jehovah, among the gods "(Exod. xv. 1.) "Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them." (Exod. xviii 11), Moses represents Jehovah to Pharaoh as the "Cind of the Hebrews," not as the Supreme Lord of Heaven and earth. In the delivery of Commandments it is not said "thre is no God but Jehnyak," but only "I am the Lord thy God which brought thee out of the House of bondage; thou shall have no other Gods beside (or before) me" (Exod. xx. 2-3). Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel" (Joshua, xxiv. 2). Incline your heart unto the Lord, the God of Israel." (Joshua. xxiv. "The Lard our God we will serve." (os. xxiv. 24).
3)
The third and more perfect stage of the Jewish conception of the Godhead may appropriately be said to belong to the Prophets and the Psalms. Civilisation hati considerably advanced and with itthe gross anthropomorphic notions of a previous age gave place to more refined conceptions and more elevated thoughts. And all this gradual, self-evolving thergony among the Jews is, as we said, an irrefutable demonstration that their representations of the Deity were not revelations, but purely and simply the work of the buman understa ding.
BIBLE CONTRADICTIONS,
We are now come to another intrinsic proof that the Scriptures are not inspired, viz. their mani- fold and patent contradictions. We will group them under four lends :-theological, moral, historical, and speculative.
1. Theological contradictions. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold it was very good. (Gen. 31.)
And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at.bis. heart. (Gen. vi, 6)
And the Lord appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for a house For now have I chosen and of sacrifice... Banctified this house, that my name may be there forever; and mine eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually. (2 Chr. vii, 12, 16.)
Howbrit the Most High dwelleth not in tem- ples made with hands. (Acts vii, 48.)
Dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto. (1 Tim. vi, 16)

God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repait. (Sam. xxiii, 19.)
And it repented the Lord that he had inute man on the earth, and it grieved him at hus heart. (Gen. vi, 6.) ·

... Behold, the days come that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house. (Sam ii, 30, 31.)
In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Is Jah, the son of Ainoz, came in him, and said unto bim, Thus saith the Lord, Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. ... And it came to pass afore Isaiah was

Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? (Gen. xviii, 25.)
A God of truth, and without iniquity, just and right is he. (Deut. xxx, 4.)
