In a letter to the Madras Mail, in reply to the criticism passed on the selection of Mr. Bradlaugh. as leader of the Indian party in Parliament, Mr. Eardley Norton writes that the selection of Mr. mdlaugh as leader was settled after grave con sultation between Mr. Dadabhoy Naorojce, Mr. W. C. Bannerjee, Mr. W. Digby and Mr. Norten himself. Mr. Norton adds: We need as an advocate with a seat in the House, one who is possessed of great intellectual ability, a great grasp of fact, with the leisure to study and the brain power to digest; an advocate with inherent sympathies for peoples. We want one who could not merely understand, but could enforce; an advocate who could secure a hearing inside Parliament and outside, and give a great impetus to the great work by arresting the attention of English voters; one who could touch their hearts. Above all, we needed an advocate with indomitable energy and courage, who could not Within the last few days 300 taels have been be scared by threats of party or the blandi h-brought here to be distributed among the ments of official kies; one who would estimate destitute along the late Yellow River. The cholera scare has passed away, though we hear reports of its prevalence in the country villages to the west and north.

The case of the American Mission having been again brought to the notice of the United States Minister, further pressure, we understand, was brought to bear on the Taungli Yamen, and in response learn that the Governor has received additional instructions to effect a settle. ment. We are only waiting to hear that deeds as well as words are to come to pass. The way. orders have come down to the Governer from the interposition of the French, German, British, and American Legations, is a matter of surprise, but greater is the surprise that in no case as yet has anything been actually accomplished. Perhaps the Governor understands the real intent of orders from the Tsungli Yamen, belter than simple-minded missionaries.

Preparations are now being made for the approaching military examination. The Gov- crnar gamed the commendation of all in the literary examination, and is expected to do even better in the military, as this is more properly the sphere in which he has moved, and in which he has shewn some ability.-N. THE opening of BRITISH NORTH BORNEO

NORTH BORNEO COMPANY dates from 1881, and recently the English Goverment have assumed a Protectorate over it.

Owing to the few Members of the Church of England it has, prior to this, bees found impos: sible to collect sufficient funds to pay a resident Chaplain.

Now, however, owing to the strenuous efforts of THE RIGHT REV. HOSE, Bishop of Singapore, Labuan, and Sarawak, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign parts have granted £200 a year for five years towards this object as well as Missionary Work. The Bishop has selected an experienced Chap- lain, but the salary being insufficient, an extra amount has been promised locally and also funds sufficient for the building of a Famonage. Funds are, however, earnestly required towards the erection of a Church and School.

The smallest contributions for the above will be thankfully received and acknowledged by

LB. VON DONOR, Hon, Secretary and Treasurer, Church Clergy and School Fund;
