THE charge of assault brought by Quinto, the captain of the "Tug," against P.C. Mackie, was further investigated by Mr. Pollock this alter noon. After additional evidence had been heard, Mr. Webber, who appeared for the defendant, pointed out the numerous discrepancies in the evidence adduced by the complainant, and his Worship dismissed the case, saying that it ought never to have been brought.

Hongkong, 13th November, 1888... (The China Mail list is, of course, rubbish. "In May, 1886, special resolutions were passed empowering the Directors to appropriate a partion of the profits to a Fund for the equalization of dividends, and to transfer a sum of $200,000 from the Reserve Fund to the credit of Capital Account, thus paying up the final call of $3; per share, and making the paid-up capital of the Company $800,000 in cight thousand shares of $100 each, fully paid up. It was further decided to sub-divide these cight thousand shares of $100 into forty thousand of $20 each. A DEVOUT hawker had a narrow squeak this morning. He had been so scared of fires that be resolved himself into a Committer for the preservation of public safety, and moved, seconded, and passed a resolution that something be done at once. He therefore began collecting funds enough to hire a priest to come and lay the fire fiend up with a broken leg, and among the contributors was a widow, who gave him ten cents, Having got thirty cents he began to look out for some low-down divine who could be got cheap, but none of them would look at anything less than a dollar. A SWEETLY pretty little seventeen year old girl from Canton told a little romance to Mr. Pollock this morning. She said that she was sold to a man when young; and that lately he died, and she was prevailed upon by an old woman to come down here and see the theatre. She came, opt: Belton Aira, J. 17 Cox and ber inveigler wanted to ship her off to 'Singapore, and would have done it if she had not made tow enough to attract the police. Unluckily she couldn't remember her facts long enough, and mixed her narrative up, so as she had apparently had a good time free gratis, and was none the worse, nobody got anything done to, them, and the Court fired the let outside. YESTERDAY afternoon the Government and Volunteer Fire Brigades had a call which kept them busy until dinner-time. The house No 53, East Street,-one of the steep streets off Queen's Road West-occupied by gamblers, gog on fire in the usual mysterious way, and es none of the inmates tried to extinguish the whole place was soon blazing merrily. Its height above the sea-level caused some delay, there baving to be three relays of engines to pump from the Prays. The street was Barrow, the houses lofty and closely packed, and it looked as though the quarter was going to be purified by being burnt down. Five high pressure jels were got to work, however, and after a good deal of the brickwork had been washed away the fire was put out, the adjoining shanties being hardly damaged,

As General Director of the Civil Administration of Manila, Don Ballesteros has undertaken in his department an active campaign for promoting the development of the Archipelago, and introduced important reforms which if carried out, would largely contribute to the welfare of these Islands, Every one knows the feraciousness of this fine Archipelago, its exuberant productions, its benignant climate, which combined with the submissive manners of the people and with other natural advantages, ought to attract towards the Philippine Archipelago-a real penil ofthe East, -all the peoples of the earth.
