In Chelang there is a large band of brigands in the mountains N.E. of Tin-jun Hien, Chu- chow Fu, in the Wenchow Taolai's Circuit, and wild about go from Ch'u-chow Fu. This is a and solitary mountain region, extending north- wards, to the Kin-hwa Prefecture, southwards, to the Tsing tien District. They have felt secure in this fastness, and many of their friends have gone to swell their forces. The Tantai of Wenchow, Joan Ts'iu-fang, on 16th September received a report from the Tain-jun Hion stating that the Government troops sent against these brigands, who now had zoco men with them, had failed to dislodge them, and applying for ald. The Wenchow people are in much trepidation, fancying alarms of war in every rustle of the grass or sough of the wind; but there is really, according to the above authentic news, nothing they need fear.

Last month, listening to the advice of his wife, who could not get on with her sister: in-law, the younger brother persuaded and bullied the elder into moving out, assigning him as his share in the family estate ten broken- down old rooms at the Fang-sheng Yuan, and annexing the lion's share of the property for himself. The elder brother, too simple to com- plain, and having no ready money to hire masons for repairs, set to work with his own hands, patching up leaks in the roof and puting fresh planks in the walls. One day he unearthed by chance at the foot of the wall two ancient pitchers buried just beneath the soll, and found to his great joy that they contained ingots of gold and silver, buried for safety by some former occupant, amounting to three thousand and some odd hundreds of incls. This was heaven's reward for his simple probity, and his crafty brother pulled a very long face. when he heard. of the treasure-trova.

THE NEGLECT OF LIFE ASSURANCE.
TH
*HERE is no feature of our civilised life that strikes a thoughtful man with more force than the neglect of LIFE ASSURANCE. By payment of a small quarterly subscription any man of good health can secure a very large sum to his family in case of premature death, yet hundreds of families brought up in comfort-- Perhaps in luxury-are left in extreme poverty every year from the bread winner having neglected to assure his life. In the East many. a man lives up to his income, knowing well that if death cut him off suddenly, his wife, and children would be left almost wholly unprovided for, All this can be prevented by Life Assurance.
