the cuirass in the French army was seriously discussed, and was recommended by a Commis. sion of distinguished officers. The cuirass affords little or no protection against rifle fire, but in the future campaign the Cuirassiers are not likely to be called upon frequently to charge infantry in mass. It is against the enemy's cavalry that the Cuirassiers will be found most useful, and in a cavalry melde the value of the cuirass can scarcely be over-estimated. ANOTHER instrument for recording sound has been brought over from America, known as the Tainter Graphophone, the invention of Mr. Charles, Sumner Tainier. In the essentials of construction this latest sourd writer is practically the phonograph under a new name. Speech or piece, which is attached to a diaphragm. The latter vibrates in exact and really wonderful accord with the voice much as the tympanum of the car must do-and a minute steel point cuts on the waxen surface of a cylinder, a curved hair line, which also accurately corresponds to the motions of the diaphragm. So fine are the lines traced that 160 of them, with equal spaces between, would lie within an inch; and yes with such nicety are they traced that when the motion is reversed and the stylus again goes over the curve the diaphragm is once more set in vibration precisely as before, and it gives back to the ear the same sounds as were sung or spoken into it. Mr. Tainter claims to have been the first to employ wax instead of infall or some other metallic surface and this is the most important element in the recent marked improvement" in the art of sound recording.

The winter session of 1887-88 extended over months and the summer session of 1888 over 3 months.
The following subjects were taught Botany, Chemistry, Physics Latin, Anatomy, Physiology, Materia-Medica, Minor Surgery, Clinical Obser vations and Military Ambulance Work. The number of Lectures delivered were in accordance with the regulations demanded by the Universities and licensing bodies Great Britain, and the attendance of students was daily checked by a carefully kept register. The Lectures have naught but praise to bestow upon the work done by the Students, whether as regards the attendance at classes, or the progress attained as tested by their appearance at the class and prize examina. tions. Those of us who are acquainted with teaching and examinations in Great Britain, are satisfied that the tests applied to the Students of this College were on an equality with those of the British standard of examining bodies, and that the students of the College passed through these in a creditable manner. The number of teen, and the members of the Court and Senate cames of students on the College books is seven- of the College are of the belief that the number is sufficient to justify them in the continuance of the work, with all enthusiasm and hope.
