It is currently rumoured in the colony-and it was openly stated in one of our contemporaries a few days ago that Mr. George Hayward's appointment as superintendent of Victoria Gaol, announced in the London & China Ex press, was perfectly correct, and that this ap. pointment, duly signed by the Earl of Derby, arrived in the colony some time ago. Nothing in any way relating to the matter has yet appeared Pin the Government Gazette, and the tongue of rumour says that Governor Bowen has taken upon himself to return the appointment to the Secretary of State, and to ask his lordship to reconsider his decision. We give these re ports for whatever they may be worth, although We have good grounds for believing that they are not far from the truth. It is quite true that a young officer in the garrison was strongly rerived in front of the offices of the Wa Hop Tele-moral view. But, it was surmised in time.. commended for the appointment, and there is too much reason to fear that, as in the case of the superintendentship of the police, another official job is intended. It will, therefore, be a scandalous injustice, and anything but to the credit of the Government, If an outsider is, by special favor of the Gov. ernor, or any back-door influences, pitchforked into this responsible position over the head of an old and deserving servant of the colony.
