NEWCHWANG, April, 1883. Although the river commenced to break up on the 21st March, still we cannot say that our and Glacial Epoch is quite over yet; ice continues to float up and down the stream with the tides, but it has lost its dangerous nature, getting as soft as butter; frozen butter, nind The winter has not been hanging heavily on the hands of the foreign community

LATE TELEGRAMS.

The following telegraphic items; received by the American Mail, were crowded out yester- day.

PEORIA (II.), March 16th.

In an interview with Pat Crowther of this city, he professed great exultation at the attempt to blow up the governmert building in, London, but was not in favor of the means employed. He prefers the silent, but destructive flame of the torch to the detonation of dynamite. His idea is to place two or three hundred men in the larger cities of England with a few barrels of petroleum,

there has been a pleasant, succession or await a windy night, and at a preconcerted teresting musical, entertainments, and able intelligent amusements: between (even torchlight skating), shooting, pony riding, which will spread terror and destruction through athletic sports, theatricals, donkey racing, paper out the land and make the British lion howl for hunts, dancing, sociable gatherings and all that sort of thing, including of course the duties of peace, and it will accede to any terms at the end of the torch. While depicting the scenes of ter- ordinary routine work of daily (winter) life, the for thus caused, he disclaimed any connection hiberal months have been spent most pleasantly, with the London explosions, but rejoices at its which satisfactory result appears to be mainly effect. He knew nothing about it till this morn- due to the kind efforts of Consul Allen, Coming. He thought Rassa might have been aware missioner Lay, Dr. Morrisson and several other of the plot. He thinks it undoubtedly the work leading residents.

The health of the port during the winter-has- been O.K.; only one death occurred amongst foreigners, and in that instance. the poor man amived here, carrying the germs of death al- ready in his bosom. On the whole, New- chwang must be considered a salubrious places nobody has ever been known to die bere except as the very end of life. The second Roman Catholic Church is now in full working order; it is in the native town; your come

is in the spondent does not know if the organ North transept; he does not know if there is a organ at all; he only had a squint at the church, from the outside The fun made by frivolous persons at the expense of the recently formed Anti-Opium Prayer Union is considered exceed- ingly wrong here by some people, because the powerful effects of the native prayers have been felt here already--several years agol yes; the foreign firm importing oplum into this port had to shut shop long before the Frayer Union com menced business operations; how wonderful this application and effect of prayer! But some per sons (perhaps badly informed) are inclined to think that the steadily increasing cultivation of the native poppy bad something to do with the retirade of the foreign' oplum merchange.

The shipping season may be considered fairly open new, and though the first arrivals had hard time of it, still no serious accidents have occurred, which is principally due to the prompt and energetic action of the local harbour autho- rities, especially to the personal exertions of the Harbour Master and his Boat Officer, in berthing vessels properly besides giving timely warning of approaching ice. Their local experience has been of great utility to the shipping; how they managed dat all to fight their battle through the ice, without a powerful steam launch, for the purpose of letting the vessels have the benefit of their advice and valuable assistance, was sometimes a regular marvel; native sampana sticking frequently in able to reach the ice for hours, without the shore or ships. Therefore it must be ad-

-NEW-YORK, March-16th-

Rossa showed the following dispatch from Boston: "I congratulate you on the news from London this morning. I can collect money now in Boston. John D. Driscoll." Rossa said he had received to day offers of money, and he can obtain all that is needed. In answer to a ques tion as to what would next be done, he showed a letter advising him to publish in his paperin declaration of war on England, signed by represen- tative Irishinen. When that was done, it could not be claimed that their actions were dishonor- able. As for weapons, all available ones should be used, "This," he said, "1 is my answer."

Patrick J. Sheridan, whose extradition to Eng- land has been requested, said the work is that of Irishmen, and is but the advance picket. Much more will follow, England will shortly see, she must either free Ireland or suffer the conse- quences.

CHICAGO, March 16th. Hon. John F. Finnerty, Congressman-elect from the Third Illinois District, being interviewed regarding the attempt to blow up the Govern- ment building in London, said: "I may say I am sorry it was not more successful. I applaud the Irish in everything they do to get rid of England and her accursed rule. England' brought this, on herself, and Gladstone, more than any one else, has himself to thank for it. Forster's Midlothian speech has been quoted against him by the useless until Clerkenwell Prison has been blown up? Of course I regret that any innocent persons should suffer, but my sympathy for a few of this class is entirely over- ridden by a feeling of commiseration I have for the great inast of Irish people. My countrymen are poor and starving, and the British govern- ment will not aid them. They have reached a point where they must fight, and I am glad to see them do it. I am glad to see the inaugura tion of violence of any kind that will tend to free Ireland of the accursed cut-throats who are chok ing the life out of her. If a race war springs out of this, it will not be regretted by true Irish- men."

LONDON, March 6th.

The government offers a feward of £1,000 for the discovery of the authors of the explosion.

Spurious dollars are at present circulating in. such large quantities in Manila that people ought to be very cautious in paying and receiv ing money. In many instances spurious coins have been tendered and accepted in good faith frem and by the government departments. The Treasury and other public offices would do well to

have competent shroffs to check this imposi tion, so as to prevent the Revenue from being defrauded, and to avoid people who receive moneys from government from suffering losses. One gentleman who received a payment the other day found no fewer than six bad dollars in the sum banded over to him
