THE BUFFS" SPORTS. Tysk OF THE "HOнKong Telegrafik" SIR, Would you allow me to suggest through your valuable columns that a pony race at the forthcoming sports of the Buffs, which are to be held on the Race Course, would prove A great attraction? There are nearly a dozen apoish their hacks on the course every night, and I am sure all of them enter for the fun of the thing, An entrance fee of three or even five dollars each, would get a cup for the winner, and no other prize need be given. There would not be any trouble weighing, if that was made a difficulty, as the race could be for catch weights, and the distance from one to two miles.
Hoping you will support this suggestion, I am

GLOBE-TROTTER JOURNALISTS.
To TuS ELITOR of the "Hongkong "Telegraph," SIR-It has been my lot at various times to have thrust upon me for perusal some extra- ordinary specimens of literary ability, of that class which usually, appears in print as "My diary from London to India," or China-or any other place in fact, the whole tribe being of one sort by Miss Tabitha Muttonhead, or Mr. Verygreen Softbrain. Doubtless, Sir, you have also seen some specimens of literary art of the "diary" sort, and been amazed at the richness of thought and fertility of expression displayed by these amateur authors on their being first released from their mothers' apron strings and treated to a run to some foreign land in a craft which, whether it be a high class liner or a floating coffin, is always described as "the good ship"
this or that.
rubbish and
There is occasionally someexcuse for such pro- ductions of the class above mentioned; as it may justly enough be urged by travellers that their manufacture helps to pass away the time during a voyage, anxi so long they are only shown to friends they do but little harm. However, when productions like. "A Few Notes on my voyage from Melbourne to Hongkong" are inflicted on a long suffering public through the medium of a newspaper, said "Notes" being ridiculous agross libel on the matters dealt with by the writer, the "diary "business wants dropping down upon.
The funny part of this particular literary globe-trotter's efforts is, that the "Notes" are the production of a supposed thoroughly season- ed journalist, a man of large and varied experience in the baked potatoe line--a journal- ist whose able compilation of the vegetable market report and graphic description of the big turmit" grown in farmer Brown's cabbage- garden would command a lucrative appoint- ment as occasional "advt” canvasser, or trotter round with "copy" on a high class Sydney or Melbourne paper.

that if the resolution was carried, it would allow more men to ride than were permitted under the existing rules. There would be no hardship if the resolution was carried, for the light weights of to-day would be heavy weights to-morrow. He hoped the meeting would carry the resolutions, A similar rule had worked very satisfactorily in Hongkong for a number of years. This scale had been adopted at Amoy, and if it was adopted here, the Shanghai races would not suffer, and in favour of the resolution, he said it would make the weights uniform for the principal races. By training down, he said the heavy weight riders injured their health, and on the score of humanity, he urged that the light-weights would not adopt Shylock's system, and demand the "pound of llesh." He moved that the scale of weights be raised four pounds."
Mr. Paterson said he would second the motion.

Mr. Rees opposed the motion. He said the result of passing the resolution would be thatHE they would have a scrubby lot of 13. hands and 12.3 ponies, and the big, high anes would be handicapped. The Chairman talked about their wanting a pound of flesh from the heavy. weight jockeys, but from his experience, he was sure they could well afford to give two, three, or even four pounds.
Mr. Walker agreed with Mr. Rees. The races at Hongkong were nearly all carried off by three or four men. He asked the meeting to vote for the light weights.
Mr. Brandt said he was a heavy-weight rider,' but he was entirely against raising tirely out of It would simply drive the ponies entirely out of the running, as the small ponies could carry weights much better than the large ones.
