others, The innovation proved such a dis- nal failure, that very properly it has not been repeated. A very efficient and much more convenient substitute was the cargo-boat Faily decked with bunting, moored close to the winning post, where a very substantial repast was prepared, to which ample justice was done. By kind permission of Colonel Hobson and the Officers of The Bluffs, the excellent band of the regiment was present, and enlivened pro- ceedings throughout the afternoon by playing the following carefully selected programme in their usual finished style --

FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR.. "M.S. TONNOCHF.

As we announced would be the case in our last issue, the body of Mr. M. S. Tonnochy was interred in the Protestant Cemetery, Happy Valley, this morning. The funeral cortége left Victoria Gaol at 8 o'clock, the prison bell solemnly tolling as the coffin was borne from the Superintendent's quarters and placed in the hearse. Nearly the whole of the European residents of the colony were present, besides a large number of Indians, Chinese and representa- tives of other nationalities. As the procession slowly wended its way towards Wong-nel-chong, many people from various quarters joined in, and on arriving at the cemetery, the following was largely augmented by friends of the deceased, who were waiting there. It was suggested, as. the deceased was a Past Master of the Zeland Lodge, and a most zealous and enthusiastic

There were certainly any number of small craft about, and more steam launches than we ever remem her to have seen in any previous year, the mili- tary element largely predominating. For the junior, sculls, Fisher, Ball and Danby faced the starter, and after a dismal procession, in which erratic steering was the most pro minent feature, the scullers finished in the order named, Fisher winning by over a hundred yards. The time was very poor, and the form wretched. The gig mace for soldiers and Euro- pean policemen as has invariably been the case for many years past caused a deal of excitement, the police in their old boat the Zulu the strength of their last year's victory, being popular favorites. Only three crews, the police, an R.A. crew in the fantous Gleaner, and the affs, came to the post, and the smooth water being all in favor of the cut-down Canton four, the Royal Artillerymen managed to repeat their 1880 victory, after a desperate race, by ra- ther over a clear length, the Buffs a few lengths member of the craft, that he should be buried VACHTS.....................................................E.
