FOOCHOW RACING NOTES.

To give selections for the forthcoming Winter pice Meeting, for which so many new ponies are entered, and at a season when there is no dépendency upon the watery element not render ing the course too heavy to suit the finer trained

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1882.

YOKOHAMA.

The race between the Richmond's dingy and the gig of the Marchesa-both 4-oared boats, came off this afternoon (16th), distance about a nautical miles. The start was effected by one of the officers of the Richmond, and the boats equines, is no easy task. The rain which fell

were accompanied by Messrs: Whitfield and during the Spring Meeting, undoubtedly upset Dowson's launch, carrying the umpire. The many of our calculations; and we only wish we yachtsmen caught the water first, obtaining a could rely upon native opinion, which is to the slight lead, which was gradually though surely effect that there is no occasion to fear rain increased throughout,, despite the strenuous during the middle of this month. We have abefforts of the dingy's crew. The stake boat, off stained from furnishing our readers with weekly the ¿fonocacy's bow, was passed by the winning training notes, as there, were several strange boat exactly one minute and ten seconds ahead. ponies to arrive, and the majority, of the local The winners were met by a boat from H.B.M.'s ones required a few weeks work before any sloop Daring, and towed round the latter vessel adequate opinion could be formed as to their

As little further improvement can be expected in the short interval between now and passing.. the 14tly we are in a position to give fairly decisivel tips, by which we hope our general readers (for we bow to the superior, judgement of the cognoscenti) may be benefitted. Provid- ing that the course remains a "fying" one, we prognosticate that for the first day's sport Mr. Forward cannot be possibly beaten

for the (

After the race between the boats' crews of the

Richmond and Marchesa on Thursday, in which the last named scored a decisive victory, a boat's crew of the Monocacy challenged the winners to pull over the same conrse, to be rowed in 5-oared gigs. This being accepted by the yachtsmen, the event came off this afternoon (18th) and again

Bill's Care Stewards Cup, whilst one of Mr. the Marchesa's crew scored a win. The course Yorke's pair will secure a second place, with was the same as on Thursday, from the lightship Revenge a good third. We are more doubtful to a boat moored near the onocacy, distance about the Maiden Stakes than any race through about a miles. Both boats were towed to the out the Meeting, but we select Major Hagstock's lightship, and were despatched by an officer. Wild Waiffers win, Mr. Fohkien's best for second, and we should like to see My. Nick run intothird place with: Sulphur or Brimstone. The Com- pradores Cup ought to be won by Mr. Bill's Pezzicato or Mr. St. Andrew's best, unless Presto, whose start is doubtful, upsets our arrangements; whilst Forest King is good for a place. For the Hack Stakes, Mr. Lancet's Creedmore is a steady old pony matched with the heavy weight of 12st, for the short balf mile, and can carry the weight as well as Pretension. The Stand Stakes will prob- ably be secured by Mr. Yorke's best, although not without a struggle, as there are four rather formidable ponies entered for this race. The Haekwan Cup may rest between Wild Waif and Stray Shot, and Mr. Bill's. Vivace, might secure a 3rd position. The Hongkong Cup shews six- teen entries consisting of nearly all the best ponies in the Meeting, and it would be arrogance upon our part to attempt to select a winner, when it is impossible to tell what will face the Starter. This race will be a good test as to the best **staying pony: especially as the "field" is pretty evenly weighted, with the exception of the winner of the Compradores Cup, who will carry a seven pounds penalty if he puts in an appearance to contest the event.

from the Monocacy. As on the previous day, the yachtsmen were the first to catch the water, and obtained a trilling start. After the crows had settled down, the Marchesa's men were pulling a strake of 43 to the minute to their apponcis' 38,-drawing steadily ahead, and leaving the donocacy's crew, foot by foot, although the latter spurted repeatedly in the most plucky and de- termined manner, but without being able to make any appreciable, difference in position of the two boats. When half the distance had been covered, the Marchesa's men, pulling well within themselves, and at the rate of 40 strokes per minute, were leading fully ten lengths, the Alonecacy's crew having slowed down to about 28 per minute. From this porind, the race was quite devoid of interest, the yachtsmen continu ing to increase their lead, and eventually winning by two minutes, finishing with a clean and well pulled stroke of 1 to the minute. The time occupied by the winning boat was 16 minutes. The race was accompanied by several steam launches with a numerous party of visitors.- Japan Herald.
