THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1882.
CHEFOO.
[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.]
18th November, 1881. The Chinese gunboats Chao Yung and Yang Secretary Mr. Hest on board, left for Shanghai yesterday. Three Chinese gunboats arrived from Port Arthur on the 16th, and three more from Taku yesterday. The Chinese gunboat Tein hai arrived from Corca on the 16th inst, and left to-day for Tientsin.
MACAO, 27th November.. Far from retracting and apologizing for my assertions against the Macao Government, I te, the latter with Captain Lang and his tell "5," your correspondent of the 23rd instant, that nothing short of a cacoethes scribendi can reveal and cure the moral, political and com- mercial evils that disgrace this wretched depen dency of Portugal. Macao is poor and degraded, simply because the liberty of the press has, from time immemorial, been abused and trampled on.
There is no prejudice strong enough, no par tiality of however pronounced a character, that can vie with our governmental policy of turning a deaf ear to political scandals, in order to fatten the Treasury of the colony; a fatness as rotter as that of the Mother Country, whose exchequer draws largely on her dependencies, to the detri-
ment of the latter.

For my own part, although I respect contro- versial opinions, I care not a straw for the sham pseudo-patriotism of your correspondent of the 23rd. He may praise the actual administration to the sky, but as he is known to be very super- ficially acquainted with its policy, the value of his praises are casily appraised.
There are scares of people here who know better, and have seen more, who only laugh at his feeble attempt to seriously whitewash cer- tain government officials at the expense of the
true friends of Macao.

We will soon be going into winter quarters OCCIDENTAL AND ORIENTAL STEAM
once more, and another week will probably see the last steamer of the season away. We have been having a rather large share of wind lately, but the weather is comparatively mild and pleasant again. Most of the ponds are frozen over and are almost bearing. Skates are being brought to light and put in readiness for the win- ter campaign. The Consular pond has been en larged and deepened, and our worthy Consul has again kindly placed it at the disposal of the skating community.
Que of our oldest and most respected resi dents left us a few days ago, homeward-bound, for a well earned two years' holiday. We wish the Doctor God-speed, and hope he will have a good time at home.
Another old resident is also availing himself of the closed season to take a short run home some people here are actually wicked enough to again, and (such is the depravity of human nature) say that it would be a good thing for the peace and well being of the community generally if he stayed at honic. Of course, it's very wrong to say anything of the kind, but constantly devoting his spare energies to throwing mud right and left, however soothing it may be to his own feelings, is not in the least degree calculated to increase a man's popularity, even though he may boast the weight which wealth and years lend to dignify his favourite occupation."

PATENT SOSTENENTE PIANOS,
"Paris, Nov. 4, 1878. "I have attentively examined the beautiful Pianos of Mesars. John Bringmead and Sons that are exhibited at the Paris International Exhibi- tion of 1876. I consider them to be exceptional in the case with which gradations of sound can be produced, from the softest to the most power ful tones. These excellent pianos menit the ap- probation of all artists, as the tone is full as well as sustained, and the touch is of perfect evenness

PATENT SOSTENENTE PIANOS,
I have pleasure in expressing my opinion that the Paris Exhibition Model Grand Piano- fortes of Messrs. John Brinsmead and Sons are unsurpassed. The tone is deliciously sweet, sustained, and extraordinarily powerful; the touch responds to the faintest and to the most trying strains on it and the workmanship is simply perfect.
