'SPORTING GOSSIP.

Aquatic sports appear to be again rising public estimation and favor in the Far East. have lately seen accounts of very successful regat. tas held in Japan and at Shanghai, and it is only a few days ago since a report of a first rate day's boat racing at Canton appeared in these columns. And now I observe that our athletic friends in Swatow have arranged to hold a regatta at their pretty little port on the last day of the present month. The programme, reproduced in another column, is a capital one, and should produce some exciting competitions. There are two events open to all-comers, but I suppose it is. scarcely probable that crews from Hongkong, or from any other Coast Ports, will enter the lists again, Swałow. However, even without any inter-port competition to raise the excitement to fever pitch, the Swatow Regatta is certain to prove a very enjoyable and most sporting affair.

cheong not so very long ago. It was a beautiful morning, and training operations had just ter- inminated, when a young gentleman, inaunted on a grey roadster, came ambling down the straight past the stand enclosure, where several well- known local "sports" were congregated, discus- sing racing affairs generally. The pony and rider appeared well matched. The weight of years had told the inevitable tale on the old hack; the seat of the rider in the saddle was something very like what Charles Lever described as "a pairof tongs over a wall? The pair looked so ridiculous that they were greeted with some quiet chaff The rider especially, appeared so ill at case, thai a well-known sportsnán remarked with grim humour that he looked, "like Napoleon crossing SHIP the Alps in an open bost." · Tempora mulantur, &c. The gentleman with the "tongs over a wall" seat, was Mr. Nicholson, the rider wha steered White Knight to glorious victory; the sportsman who likened him to "Napoleon cross ing the Alps" was Mr. Henry, the owner of that most sensational of St. Leger winners. The moral of this anecdote is obvious. Race riding so far as China panies are concerned is a mere question of practice,

I hear that the forthcoming local regatta to be held under the auspices of the Victoria Recre- ation Club, promises to turn out an unusually in- teresting affair. Large entries are expected from the outside elements, and it is probable that the races set apart for the police, the military, and blue jackets will be keenly contested. Several Chinese crews are also practising for the house boat races, and I hope that this interesting class of contest will regain the position it held a few years back as one of the most exciting races on the programme. The crews for the Chairman's Cup and other Canton four events, are gradually getting into condition, and some very exciting struggles for supremacy are confidently predicted by those who ought, to know something of the

matter.

There was nothing particularly noteworthy in the cricket match, Ireland v. The World, played da Saturday last. The scores all-round-were- unusually small; in fact, it was a regular bowler's day. The programine of the Hongkong Race Meeting of 1883 was circulated this morning, and will be found in another column. The number of races on the card exceeds that of previous years, and there are several noteworthy alteration", which I shall allude to another day. The bill of fare is a brilliant one, and yet in some respects It is sadly disappointing. Surely making the rauch-talked- of steeplechases mere scratch affairs with post entries, is a great blunder. If the Stewards desired to scotch this branch of sport, they could not possibly have adopted turer means. It may be accepted as a certainty that no owner of ponies will be silly enough to devote valuable ponies to steeplechasing for the sake of what is sure to prove a mere scramble. At least one cross | ANVILS; VICES, AND DRILLS COMBINED, country event should have found a place on the programme of the meeting, with stipulations and conditions plainly set forth. As matters have been arranged, the promised sensational jumping | GLASSCUTTERS, race has every appearance of degenerating into an absurd parody on sport.
