THE MANILA LOTTERY, To Tux Error'or tær "longkung TrenguapH,” S-I have taken a ticket for the Manila Lay every month for the period of a year, but lave never been able to find any of my former numbers amongst those published in the prize list. Could you kindly suggest some reason for the omission? Do you attribute it entirely to "chance" that my numbers have never appeared? It seems so strange to me that i am greatly
SURPRISED.
Hongkong, 20th October, 1882. [We have no knowledge whatever of the mys leries of the Manila Lottery, this being a class of investment we have carefully avoided. Con sidering the vast number of tickets circulated, there is, however, nothing surprising in our cor respondent's pumbers having "ommitted" to figure on the prize list. We know a gentleman who invested largely in Manila lottery tickets every month for eleven years, and during the whole of that time he only frew one prize of $30 This fact speaks for itself. We detest Fan-tang but in our opinion, even this one sided gambling arrangement is preferable to the gigantic imposition known as the Manila Lottery-Ed: Hongkong Telegraph]

Yesterday we noticed two very large cases. landed at the Hongkew Wharves from the M.M, Co.'s steamer Pathe, and on enquiry we learned that they contained an oil painting and stand. The painting is a life-size portrait of His Ex- cellency Li Hung-chang, Viceroy of Chihli, TWO SPACIOUS ROOMS (UNFURNISHED) and is a present from Herr Alfred Krupp, of Essen, Germany, to His Excellency. It was painted at Diisseldorf by a German painter of great reputation, from a photograph taken at Tientsin about two
Colonel years ago. Schmidt, during his recent stay in Europe, as well as high Chinese officials of the Embassy, who were well acquainted with Li's physique, greatly assisted the artist by their explanations as to his appearance. It is said that the portrait is excellently done and that the likeness is exact. The two boxes are at present in the hands of Krupp's agent here, and will be forwarded to Tientsin by. an early oppotunity. To prevent any damage being done the boxes will not be opened here we are sorry to say, for we should have liked very much to have seen the portrait; however, we expect to hear more about it from our Tientsin correspondent, after the painting has been handed to Li Hung-chang-fercury

There will shortly be a revision of the Lands Acts of the Queensland territory, as of all the other Aus tralasian Colonics; and when this is carried through, the days of the arbitrary rule of the aquatters and planters, who were annexing tracts of country to their own good selves as large as our largest English countics, simply by the introduction of capital and coolie labor, are numbered, This will be solely owing to, The prompt action of the people, who though according to the Hongkong morning oracle they are not so wise in their genera tion as the South Australian Government, are yet sufficiently wise and far-seeing to have taken practical steps to place a great bar to the system of landlordism which has lately caused so mich disturbance in Ireland and Great Britain, this "bar", being, as anyone acquainted with Australia must know quite well, the stopping of the Chinese "rush."
