DEPORTATION OF PROFESSIONAL
BEGGARS.
This morning the steamship Ningbo left for Hongkong, and gave us good riddance of some Jewish beggars who were collecting money here on the "rength of a famine that occurred in Palest 121 years ago; passage tickets were procured for them by one of the wealthy Jewish houses.mother 'couple, however, who were also offered passage tickets refused to accept them; and they fell into the hands of the police yesterday and appeared at the Mixed Court this morning. They had been going round the Set: tlement for some days, and entering private houses, even forcing their way into sick rooms, and were very cheeky in their demands. The following petition was sufficient for them to raise about Stoo here:-
THE HONGKONG G TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1882.
The ball room was tastefully decorated with ever greens, etc, and great credit is due to those who undertook the decorations. The floor was covered with canvas, and the left hand corner of the upper end was set apart for the musicians, belonging to the Customs Club. From the entrance door lead- ing to the building, a row of lanterns, painted in national colours, with the initials "C.P." wete, hung up, while underneath the verandah, grotesque Chinese lanterns were also suspended. The whole of the arrangements in connection with the ball were conducted in an excellent manner with scarcely a hitch, and the result, as was anticipated, proved to be of a most successful character. The Committee are to be congratu inted upon the success on the opening of the Club,

The library and reading room is an airy and com- fortable apartment. It seems that Joseph had not the slightest intention of "going to his native place back." A document was found on him showing that he was to open the "Café de Vienna" in Broadway, Hongkew, in partnership with some other party; the capital. ofthe company was to be $200, of which Joseph was to pay up one half in full; his partner was to give the present furnishings of some house-a panor ama and some chairs, &c.-as part of his half share, and to pay Sto per month till his half share was fully paid up. Mr. Chen made the generous offer to pay $20 towards their passage money, and Joseph cocked his cars at this although he pretended to know very little Eng lish and had previously been very uncommunica- tive. The Asscisor Mr. Cheshire-took the advice of Inspectors Stripling and Fowler, and told the Magistrate that it would be giving a premium on such

DI BRAZZA'S DISCOVERIES.
-The final triumph in West African explorations has been achieved by the French under that in- defatigable explorer, Count di Brazza, who in a few days will be feted by the French Geographical Society. As our despatches said yesterday, "the Frenchman has siden a inarch on Stanley and made the Congo river virtually a French river." To understand the question thoroughly we cannot pick it up later than 1876, when in the address by President Sir Henry C. Rawlinson before the Royal Geographical Society of London, we find him saying," In the meantinic the famous French Expedition, under the Count di Brazza, strong in numbers and perfect in equipment, has renetrated on its way up the Ogowe. The Count di Brazza expected, we are told, to reach Lake Tanganyika in three years, and opinión on the coast among-| those most competent to judge was said to be favorable to the success of the enterprise. We are not in a position here to confinin or reject this opinion, which, after Lieutenant Cameron's bril lant exploit, can hardly be deemed extravagant; but I may, at any rate, suggest that if the French
pakorra of Cameron, rather than the Tanganyika, do reach a great central lake, it will be the
and may add that the successful accomplishment of such a journey would completely eclipse the glory of our own explorers, inasmuch as the coun- iry through which Count di Brazza woak pass from the sea coast is far more difficult than the region on the eastern side of the continent."

the river Agnovne and found it was separated by only ciglity kilometres from the Alima, which nows right into the pool. Stanley's road- way from the coast is_240 kilometres long. The river called Agnovne in the despatch is doubtless the Ogowai, or Ogowe. From a map presented by M. Francois Berton to our Geogra phical Society here we can trace Di Brazza's route. He must have gone up the Ogowal River, turned into the Alima River, until he found him self within 80 kilometres, or 49.71 English miler, from Stanley Pool. Then he cut his road and transported his ships as quictly as you please. French vessels there. This may be an error in be doubted whether, Stanley found fifty telegraphing, but there.can be no doubt that the French have bought up all the land around and have virtually the monopoly of the Congo River. There are several missionary stations along the Congo, the head one being under Mr. Grattan. Guiness at Stanley Fool, as the natives there are more friendly and less vicious than those on, the Lower Congo, nearer-the-sea-There-liquses, workshops, a school, dispensary and a church were projected in 1880 by the missionarica, aided by the munificence of the King of the Belgians and the Royal Geographical Society. These have probably been erected nearly two years, as ac cording to the July, 1880, number of L'Afrique Explorer et Civiliser (about thirty numbers of which have also been presented to our Geogra- phical Society by Consul Berton), work was to have been begun after the arrival of the mission in the Summer of that year. The natives were to be taught to read and write, to grind grain by water-mills and to Irrigate the country; to learn to be black-smiths and to work the iron, which is
