3rd May, 1882.
A Corcan Embassy has arrived here en route for l'eking-Russian aggression, being, accord-
The body of Mr. Man, late and engineer of the steamer Tientsin, who fell overboard from that steamer on the 20th March, was recovered last night, and will be buried this evening,
Next come the mines from Shun Ti-foo to the harder of Honan and Shantung provinces, which possess lead ore. Specimens of the native lead were given last October to Captain Mignard, of the Chinese Imperial Navy, and on analyzing iting to public rumour, the occasion of the same. he was surprised at its richness. Copper, clay for making the finest porcelain, iron and coal are so found. The subjoined report by John Percy, ALD, F.R.S., of the Royal School of Mines, London, as given to Mr. James Henderson, is a good authority on the Value of the iron and coal found at the village of long-chung, in Ta Ming fon, about twenty miles from die river, which afterwards falls into the Grand Canal; and the col is therefore of easy conveyance to Tientsin for shipment to other
ports.
The German gabest was here for a few days last week, having on board Mr. A. Pelldram, German Consal at Tientsin and Count Von
Tattenbach, Secretary of Legation.
We are feeling very sore here just now on the subject of our mails, two steamers having re- cently come from your port-one direct and the If Mr. Tong-king-sing, when his attention was

He would also have had better irgn; for at Pung-chung the coal and irem are in close proximity, within a stone's throw of each other; whereas at Kaiping the iron is 30 miles from the coal mines, and to bring it down, even by rail, will entail a perpetual and heavy expense.
The range of hills which encircles the foreign settlement of Chefore is rich in irum ore, namely magnetic and brown ore. Specimens were given last year to Mr. T. C. Fergusson and to Chinese, and these have now been analyzed,' showing very favorable resalts. A Chinese company has now been formed to work these mines, and the writer has been requested to aid this cons pany. Therefore, if Mr. Tong-kingsing bad sent Mr. Burnett to Chefe, instead of sending him back again to the Yangtsze-kiang, where in 1876 he laboured in tuin, it would perhaps have been better, and more to the advantage of this mining company. As the Chinese Government, and those who are interested in the mineral wealth of China, are now more fully acquainted with the natural treantres of these provinces, it is to be hoped that they will make better use of their knowledge than they did in 1875-Mercury Correspondent.

The Chora Shimbun says that, as was pre- viously reported, tieneral Oyama, Minister of War, will shortly be appointed Minister at Paris, and that Mr. Terashima, President of the Senate, has tendered his resignation, but that whether this will be accepted or rejected by the Govern ment is still unknown.
It is stated that, possibly in connection with the recent disturbance in Coren, many cipher telegrams have been received by the Eastern Admiralty office at Yokohanta from the Japanese man-of-war now in Corean waters, and that Ad- mital Nirei, chief of the said office, holds con- tinuous conferences with the Minister of the Navy,
According to the Mainichi Skimbin, the Naval
Department has determined to despatch twa men-of-war promptly to Karea.
It is said that a sinal dock is likely to be constructed shortly near Benten, Yokohama.
The Mainichi Shimbun says, that a certain digitary, who has frequently held his hand out to the commercial community and has been much talked about with reference to money matters, purchased about one taillion yen in specie in Jamary, in compliance with the per- suasion of his bankers and some of the principal merchants of Tokiyo; and that, owing to the

The Yokohama public will be pleased to learn that, owing to a successful canvass made for sulcriptious, the services of the Japanese Naval Ad have been engaged to give a series of some twenty promande concerts, some-in the Bluff Gardens, and some on the Cricket Ground dur- ing the approaching summer mouths. The first concert will take place in June. We can but congratulate the gentlemen who so kindly took the matter in hand upon the success that has attended their efforts.
At the auction held on Tuesday afternoon at the Imperial Russian Consulate the two Russian schooners Kiwa Elizabeth and North Star were sold for the sum of $3,600 and $1,100 respectively. The purchaser in both cases was Mr. F. C. Spooner.
His Excellency Sasaki, Minister of the Public Works Department, gave a farewell lunch in the Yeurinkwan on the 3rd instant to Mr. Dyer, Principal of the Engineering College, who returns home about the end of June to assume the dirties of the important post to which he has been ap pointed
in London. Among the guests were all the foreign employes, and the principal officials of the Kobusho. The reason why this compliment was paid to Mr. Dyer now instead of, as is cus tomary, on the eve of his departure, was that the Minister desired to he present on the occasion, and is about to leave Tokiyo at an early date.
The Hochi Shimbun's Fusan correspondent publishes the following letter, lately sent by Taiin leader of the Corean anti-progressionists, to Kun, Li Hung Chang, Viceroy of Pechiti, China:
The commercial Intercourse of our country with
Japan is due to nothing else but your in- structions. But now I learn from a report made to the King by Gio lachiu" (who visited
Japan last year and intely returned to Corea via Shang- hai) "that the Japanese Emperor does not desire to be aggressive himself; but that within a few months representatives of more than ten Wester nations will come here one after another. Does not this look like a united menace? Since som.c Frenchmen secretly entered the cemetery at Tokuzan and desecrated it some years ago, they have become enemies so bitter that we cannot live with them under the same sky, and.so we must not hypocritically pretend any friendship for them.
Only thing which we fear:
that Japanese in our country and attracting to them.
