Poleil aul Mr. Henry's brown subscriptim pony gallopal about a mile and a quartor steadily; Too-too and Wild Sead in the sume town being confined to a sharp burst down the straight. Grim Dasth was sent a long gallop by himself, and he is not a beauty to look at, although be manages to get over the ground. A very diminutive Mafoo amasod himself for about ten minutes in trying to porsnáló Santor Johnny to gallop a mito, an love.tually succeeded in getting this thoringh regno to slightly extend himself As racing would appear to ba an aversion to this reilly good looking. animal, he will shortly he afforded the opportunity of distinguishing himself between the shafts of a dog-cart.. Second Violin and Gang Forward were Rent at half speed for about seven fur- longs, the first nained apparently going the better of the pair at the finish. Financier only trotted, bat Gold Bar galloped half a mile at a fast pace. Spectre and Phantom cantered, Crom- well being restricted to a short about of trotting. The whole of the Eust Point griffins galloped separately, the dark grey as usual, going well. Bataplan only trotted, But Mr. Posnecker's bay and a grey griffin galloped together for about a mile and a quartor, Tajmahal, Rose, and Shamrock gallopad three quarters steadily, the chesnut failing to please the noble owner, who in a fit of dus- poration proposed to Mr. Gordon to exhange Rose and Shamrock for First Cornet. The last named sportsman declined the offer, adding that he would not give First Cornet for all the pouies Mr. Pan possessed. Dunrobin and Airlie cantored slowly, the first named half a mile, the other going once sound. Whisper and Glengarry covered the half mile at a stewly pace. The ponies representing the powerful stable presid ed over by the genius of Mr. McOniodda were conspicuus by their absence. Mr. Hutchings being expected from Amoy by the Namon it was doubtless desired to give the racers a mid-day outing.

A full-grown panther was lying in front of Messrs. Hall an1 Holtz's store this afternoon. It was placed thoro for a
short time by two Chinese, probably waiting for soms one to buy it. The animal seemed to be recently killed, as blood could be soon coming out from the mouth. The fact were. curiously tied up on a long commen Chinese stool, so that the animal wheu placed on the ground, as we saw it, looked like a live one. The Chinese said it was killed at Chinkiaug. The price demanded was an exorbitant one $80.

SHANGHAI,
The tug-boat Hron has changed hands; she is sold for $24,000; aho has been bought by Mr. Nils Möller for the owners of the ships under his ma- nagement. She is to ply on this river. At the Takasina Mine they have found the seam of coal again after driving a tounel 260 feet in length, and have got twenty years' supply of
coal. It had beou feared that the mina was exhausted,
It is well-known that most of the grent modern discoveries of science have been found to have been anti- cipated by the Chinese, printing, gun- powder, the mariner's compass, and so on, but nobody was aware until to-day that the peculiar brow known as the "Hongkow Particular" was an old in- vention of the Chinese. But, gracious 'earins! it's so; we learn on the beat authority that the Empire Browery was established in Hongkow just seven hundred and seventeen years ago. The Chinese brewed it then, and we suppose they brow it 'atill,

The free port of Hongkong hins al- ways been a thorn in the side of the Chinese, As Lord Salisbury remarked. in the House of Lords the other day, the natural remedy for high duties is smuggling, and Hongkong is a check upon excessive duties in the South of China. The Mandarins are coolly pro posing to Sir Thomas Wade to allow them to levy their duties in opiam inn PARIS-Bank Bills, on demand...... 1.67 Hongkong. We should hardly think Sir Thomas Wade would agree to that. Lord Clarendon instracted Lord Elgin a quarter of a century ago that it was no part of a British representative's duty to protect the Chinese revenue, and we should think it is the same now.
