Amoy, 9th January, 18×2, ' Favored with splendid westher, and with the course in excellent order, the first day's racing at Amoy was bound to prove a great success. During the end of last week we were rather afraid

that wo should have a wet meeting. and the most gloomy auticipations were indulged in; however, a change took place on Saturday, and fine dry wouther set in which has every appear ance of continuing during the whole three days. Training operations baro not been very exciting this season, the panies at work being far from namorous; and var race lotteries were as usual of very little account. The jockey question was one of much difficulty, for with only two Shanghai borseinen on the spot, a scarcity of riders naturally affected the quality of the sport.

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

THIS DAY, Four P.M.

There has been nothing, stirring on the Stock Exchange since we last wrotej: al-

though a fair amount of transfers have been effected in a quiet way in various local stooks.... Banks were' quoted yesterday at 117 por cont. premium, with buyers, but as no shares could be obtained at the rate, a sanguine buyer, évidently desirous of holding a few shares, negotiated ons aníall lot'at 118 ;- which may be taken as the closing quotation. A fair amount of business has been done in Dooks at 16, an advance on yesterday's rata and as there are plenty of buyers we expect ta hear of further, and more extensive transzo tions at a higher quotation. In the mean- time the stock may be fairly quoted at 40 per cent. premium, with buyers. Steam- boats are quiet but firm, with buyers ht gj per share premium, nothing, however, in the shape of sales having been booked for some days past. We expected that the end of the year, and the notice of the half yearly meeting of shareholders, would have infased some life into Hotels, but the book still stands at a nominal quotation, ani no affort to do business has been made for many weeks. Sugars more than maintain their position, for although no cash sales have bean re- ported, we can trace a fair ‘amount of time transfers at 167 for the end of the prosent month.
