Mr. Gladstone replies courteously, but Sir Bartle Frere is dis- satisfied and threatens to write a book.
Cortainly everybody understood Sir Bartle Froro in the senso Mr. Gladstono understood him.

COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE,
. THIS DAY, Four P.M. The settlements having been satisfactorily disposed of, business has been rosumed to a
considerable extent in most of the local atooks. Although a fair aumber of genuine transactions in Banks have been booked, the stock has failed to hold its own, and after sales at 118, 117, and lastly at 110 per cent. premium, sellers remained masters of the situation, and at the last mentioned rata there are still a number of shares on offer. We noted a salo in China Traders Insurance stack this morning at the quoted rate, $1,550 por share; and Hongkong Fires have also beon in demand, a fair number of shares having been negotiated at $925. Docks are still moving upwards, and after all the shares which could be obtained at 39 per cent pre- mium were taken up-vory small numbers we may mention incidentally-buyers offered 40 without in lucing, holders to deal. The present quotation; 41 with buyers, and the stook very firm at the rate, would seem to indicate that a further rise is imminent, and wo think considering the amount of romun- erative work nt present in the Company's hands, and the excellent prospects for the ensuing half your, that the stock is actually worth more than its present value on the Stock Exchange.. Steamboata still continue in better demand, as after a number of sales at 23 per share premium, a point more was offered and accepted until a fair amount of transfers had been effected. The demand eventually exceeded the supply, and buyers at 24 have not been accomodated to the extent of their requirements. Sugare bare also been largely dealt in at 160, but at that rate there are still a number of shares on the market.
