We want to know who manage these things. From advertisement, tickets for the forthcoming representation by the members of the Hongkong Choral Society of the "Pirates of Penzance," were to be obtained at Messrs. Lane, Crawford & Co.'s on and after the 3rd January at noon. We should like to be informed why any number of gentlemen assembling there an hour before the advertised time should take priority, and select all the best seats in the house for them- selves! Admitted that some rules and regulations are prevent an unseemly scramble for places, is it to be accepted that the man who first presents himself at Messrs. Lane, Crawford & Co.'s when they open in the morning, and re- mains there until noon, is to have priority of choice? and if this is ad- mitted, who is to limit him in the number of places he may take? Yesterday four seats was the extreme number allowed to any one gentle man, and we should really like to know how many of those gentlemen retained the tickets they took, and how many were simply acting as brokers for these friends, which was the thing sought to be avoided? A man may be allowed to be married, and people could not well object to his taking a ticket for his wife as well as for himself, but we think the limit should bo drawn there, or otherwise the first score of names on

the list take all the desirable places in the house, and although such an arrangement may be very agreeable to them, we fail to see why any pri- vate meeting of gentlemen at Messrs. Lane, Crawford & Co.'s would have it in their power to impose their own particular views upon people who were simply led by the Hongkong Choral Society's advertisement. By far the best plan, since there is such a rush for places, would bo to put up

to auction the first choice of seats, at Bo much per seat, and for the highest bidder to tako as many as he wants at the prico, continuing it as long as people will be found to pay premi ums for places.

Jet, late Storm Wind, a very racing like brown, and a fairly good performer in his griffin days at Shanghai, trotted a couple of miles, appearing to go freely and well. We had almost forgotten to chronicle a mile and a quarter gal- lop which the white-legged griffin ro presenting the interest of Mr. Mo. Oniodds, aud Hutching's grey, went separately. late Colonel of Engineers, J. C. Sar- torius, of the E 1,0.'s service, and of Annabella Rose, granddaughter of Ad- miral Harvey, was born Aug. 9, 1790. Al an early age he entered the navy, was prosent at the battle of Trafalgar, commanded a gunboat, at the siege of Cadiz, and was three times mentioned in the Gazelle for boating servicos. When in command of the Slaney, he was present at the surrender of the Emperor Napoleon, in 1815, to the squadron under the orders of Captain Sir Frederick Maitland, of the Bellero phon. In 1830-31, he was engaged by the Terceira Regoncy, acting for the young Queen of Portagal, to fit out and take the command of a squadron to act against the usurper, Don Mig- uel. ln this service his efforts were much embarrassed by a factious opposi- tion; and owing to this cause; and fo the contradictory orders issued from head quarters, he had a very critical duty to perform. and discretion. Nor need wo criticise the individual efforts of the various performers. Where all played well it would be invidious to make any comparison. Mr.... Willard Was of coarse quite at home as tho re- doubtable Blus Beard, and a very comical customer he made the noble Bashaw. Miss Beresford was a first rate Futima, and acted and sang in good style. Miss Vernie as Selin, and Mesdames Lyle, and Cariton, as Abdal. lah and the Fairy Queen respectively, filled their roles most efficiently, and fairly wou the suffrages of the audience. The minor characters were, consider. ing everything, fairly well filled.

In the harlequinado, the Hayes Family distinguished themselves great- ly, Mr. J.B. Hayes appearing as Clown, Mr. W. Hayes as Pantaloon, Madarue Hayes as Columbine, and the two clever youngsters as sprites. The gentlernan who acted as liurlequin also did ex- ceedingly well.

The Pantomime was repeated last night to another full house, when the proceedings passed off most satisfao. torily. We would direct special atten- tion to the performance for ladies and children to be given this afternoon at four o'clock.
