dealers held aloof even at that tempt ing offer. People who usually have their wits about thom, and moreover who ought to know something of what is going on behind the scones in "rigging" the share market were astounded, and began to believe that the story about the stock seeing "par" might be realised after all. This delusion lasted only a very short time; the shares offered were 8oon snapped up, a reaction set in and at gradually increasing figures, hundreds-we might almost say thousands of shares changed hands. Naturally enough persons of an en- quiring turn of mind who are inter- ested in these transactions, are desi- rous of knowing who bought and who sold the eighteen or nineteen hun- dred shares at 20, the five hundred at 25, and the other large lots at in termediate rates. We are not in a po- sition to satisfy these gentlemen with regard to these pertinent queries; but we think we may safely say that the fortunate purchasers were not the speculators whose liabilities for De cember 31st are so appalling.

The salary-$120 per annum, with an annual increase of $24 at the end of each year's service up to $360-should ensure a good class of competitors. Whoever originated this new idea deserves great credit.

It is surmised in some quarters · that the Hakka boat may have been suspected of smuggling, and become a prey to some of the Chinese revenge cruisers; in which case the prize would doubtless be taken straight to Canton; but we consider this, under the circum- stances, very improbable, and entertain the gravest fears for the safety of the unfortunato gentlemen. ·PIRACY IN THE CANTON, RIVER,
A great deal of sensation was created throughout the colony about noon yes terday by a report that a Hakka boat, containing two European residents in this colony had been captured by pirates in the Canton river. It appears that the two gentlemen referred to, Mr. W. Schmidt, gunsmith, and Mr. F.
