At seven o'clock the boats were got out, and the Chief Officer, Mr. Findlay, left in the pinnace with six men, one of whom, an able sentan named Dyer, was washed out of the bout by the surf when it caught her on the quarter and was drowno. The chief officer pulled to some junks lying at anchor inside the reef, and shortly after the Captain left the ship in the lifeboat with the rest of the crow (16) and got, safely on board one of the junks, which landed

THIS DAY, ONE P.M.

Business on the Stock Exchange has not made any improvement since we last wrote," although there have been plenty attempts made by holders of various local stocks to realise at almost, any reasonable prices. Docks remain the songation of the hour, and continue on their downwards course un- checked. A sort of panic seems to have seized hold of those whose confidence in the etability of the stock had previously induced them to invest heavily, and who now appear desirous of getting rid of their shares at all costs, with the usual result that the market is glutted, the price becomes considerably reduced, without leading to a single transac- tion. Dock shares have been offered all round the colony this morning at 33 per cent. pro- mium for the end of the present month, and 3⁄4 for the end of December, but not a single share has changed hands. Cash buai- ness is at presant apparently not thought of. Wilson bowled one; Forbes two, and Whyte four to be sold, it is a fair inference to make that As there are so many shares on, the market

CANTON, 18th October.

When our report left yesterday at 12.45 the Garrison had finished their first innings for 116 runs, and the Club had scored exactly a "centary" for the loss of four wickets, Whyte and. a still lower quotation is inevitable Banka are also very shaky, offers to sell at 110 for ough, or the end of October meeting with no response, and we question if a reduced rate would lead to any transfers.
