7. During the year departmental expenditure (including Government subventions) amounted to HK$4,116,492 of which $1,207,259 was spent on direct welfare work, $1,672,250 on cash grants to various welfare bodies, and HK$1,121,802 on salaries to Social Welfare Office staff. (See Appendices I and II).

Pressure on space was to some extent relieved by the two top floors of the Old Tsan Yuk Hospital being handed over to the Social Welfare Office after redecoration. The department is to take over the whole of this building on the completion of the new Sai Ying Pun Clinic.

9. Staff welfare continues to be a matter of concern to all heads of sections, and several launch trips and talks were arranged during the year. Two office basketball teams were raised to play in a charity programme at the Southorn Stadium. The men's team continued training each week and met with some success. In their free time many of the staff took part in dis- cussions and outings organized by the Hong Kong Social Workers Association.

CHAPTER III

TRAINING OF SOCIAL WORKERS

10. The rapid expansion of welfare work undertaken by official and voluntary welfare organizations has led to increased demands for qualified officers.

11. This need was met in part by the Hong Kong University two-year Social Science Course, which was originally established in 1950. The Medical Department (Almoners' Branch), the Social Welfare Office and certain voluntary organizations such as the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society extended facilities for the practical training of students taking this course, and also assisted in supervising the students during their training.

12. Facilities for specialized training continued to be provided in the form of the 20-month Club Leadership Training Course run for prospective youth leaders by the Youth Welfare
