The Committee of the Civil Service N. G. MITCHELL-INNES, Dr. AYRES, Dr. EITEL, A. K. TRAVERS, Esq.. A. SETH, Esq., J. M. da SILVA, Esq., which was elected to represent the views of the Members on the subject of the inadequacy of the salaries at present drawn have now the honour to transmit to you, to be laid before His Excellency the Governor, the view taken by them of the question under consideration. In doing so they desire to tender their warm thanks to His Ex- cellency for having taken up the subject with so much energy.
2. The Committee do not propose to particularise the various items which have been specially affected by the fall in the purchasing power of the dollar, that part of the question having been, doubtless, already dealt with by the Committee appointed for the purpose, but desire simply to call attention to the fact that the salaries at present drawn are, in the vast majority of cases, insufficient in view of the work done and the positions to be maintained.
3. It can hardly be considered desirable that with the increase in the work and importance of the various offices, consequent upon the growing prosperity of the Colony, the salaries attaching thereto should fall to such an extent as either to prevent marriage, or to drive Officers to seek more remunerative employ-
