New fields continued to be explored and in December Tom Pniewski started his excellent series "Music Of The Middle Ages", and at the other end of the musical world - a series on modern Australian music was broadcast.

Radio Hong Kong continued its policy of encouraging new composers and Chinese New Year saw the broadcast of "Plum Blossoms" which was commissioned by RHK and composed by Dr. Dale Craig of the Music Department of Chung Chi College.
Light Music

Tucked away on the second floor of RHK this section was responsible for a great part of the station's audience. 'Uncle' Ray Cordeiro, a household name in Hong Kong, not only ran the Light Music Department but also put in a two-hour stint each night with "All The Way With Ray",

Should a suitable musician or singer drop into Hong Kong he would rarely escape without putting something on tape for the Light Music Department. The section did not, however, wait for visiting artists, it constantly searched for better and more varied sounds around Hong Kong. In June a series of outside broadcasts of jazz programmes featuring many visiting international players was recorded. October saw the Brothers Four in town and the entire show was recorded and later transmitted. Deena Webster, a local folk singer, took to the air in November. A local singer and pianist, Larry Allen, recorded a series with his trio around February which proved to be very popular. The success of the year lay in the superb recording of the big band sound of Tony Carpio and his 22 musicians. RHK's outside broadcasting van again proved its value when at the end of the year it was used to effect another scoop by recording teenage idol, David Cassidy. Hong Kong's own home grown idol, Ashton Farley, continued to delight the teenagers with his regular daily broadcast of pop.

Several plays a week were broadcast by the English Radio Service and full use was made of the BBC transcription service. During the past year producer, Norman Wingrove, directed two excellent performances by actors taking part in Hong Kong Arts Festival. "The Importance Of Being Earnest" was produced with members of the Bristol Old Vic and "Hedda Gabler" with members of the Prospect Theatre Company.
