in conjunction with the Chinese Service. We have continued recording most of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra performances on a contract basis, and in addition negotiated the purchase of recording and broadcast rights from artists visiting the City Hall. The Czech violinist Eugen PROKOP was such a case in 1973.

42. While extensive use is gratefully made of the fine transcription material supplied by other radio stations, such as the BBC, Deutsche Welle and the Voice of America, the basic foundation of our pro- gramming continues to be commercial gramophone records. Our extensive coverage of the western serious music repertoire is geared, we believe, to satisfying many varying tastes.

Outside Broadcasts

43. The year began with a live show at the City Hall, Concert Hall, starring the popular British singer, Frankie VAUGHAN, who was supported by well-known local artists, and the proceeds of that show went to the Community Chest of Hong Kong.

44. And again at the City Hall, Concert Hall, also in April, the famous jazz pianist, Oscar PETERSON and his trio, played to two packed houses and one of the shows was broadcast live.

45. In September there came perhaps the biggest or one of the biggest pop events in Hong Kong-the Cliff Richard Show. Although the two performances were sellouts, Radio Hong Kong made it possible for those who couldn't get tickets to the show, to listen to it on the radio.

46. Also in September, Radio Hong Kong's disc jockey, Ashton FARLEY, captured the title of 'Top Disc Jockey in Hong Kong' for the fourth year running, in a popularity poll organized by a local newspaper. The famous German orchestra leader, James LAST, brought his orchestra to Hong Kong in October, for two shows at the City Hall, Concert Hall. Radio Hong Kong taped one of the shows for broadcast a few days later.

Studio Productions

47. A highly professional series of 13 programmes of jazz music featuring the artistry of composer, arranger and guitarist, Tony CARPIO, went into production and so successful was the series that a second followed.
