news stories in depth. Each week special attention is given to the most widely publicized news story and additional background is researched and presented with up-to-date interviews and information. The programme also includes a local documentary or feature, discus- sions and commentaries.

36. During the 'Keep Hong Kong Clean' campaign the Public Affairs Unit made a substantial contribution in giving wide publicity to the subject in talks, features, reports and interviews, including a 10 minute 'phone in' programme every morning during the week to enable the public to report their complaints or views on how the cam- paign was progressing.

37. Two interview programmes which collected an impressive list of guests during the year were 'At Ease' and 'Time to Remember'. On 'At Ease' visiting personalities and people in the news were interviewed.

38. Time to Remember' invited personalities who had colourful lives to look back on, and had the time to talk at length. Sometimes they would be local personalities who perhaps had spent some long time in the Far East or visitors with an interesting background.

Serious Music

39. We continue to maintain a production in excess of 50 hours of serious music per week. Western serious music occupies about a quarter of the total English Service programme output, and of this approximately two thirds is carried on a separate high frequency FM transmission in the mornings and evenings.

40. The number of studio recitals continues to rise and it is significant that distinguished international artists do not disdain to approach the station when visiting Hong Kong. Among such per- formers during 1972-73 were the pianists Michael ROLL and Amiram RIGAI, the flautist William BENNETT, and the cellist Ross POPLE. Radio Hong Kong remains an important patron and supporter of local talent, and commissions each year a work by a local composer.

41. During the first Hong Kong Arts Festival, live broadcast rights were secured for four important concerts, comprising the opening concert and speech by H.E. the Governor and subsequently, perform- ances by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Menuhin Chamber Ensemble; these broadcasts were relayed live by VHF link
