25. Short talks of 5 minutes duration are still popular. They include 'Chats for All Homes', 'Quotations from Classics', 'The Answer Is', and 'Talk on Cantonese Pronunciation',

Outside Broadcasts

26. There are an average of 40 Chinese outside broadcasts per month during the year. Regular programmes included soccer, church services, Government Lotteries draws, horse racing and night club relays. Other major outside broadcasts included the opening of the cross-habour tunnel, and of the Kwai Chung container port, and coverage of the Chinese Manufacturers Exhibition, the British Indus- trial Exhibition, the Schools Music Festival, the first International Arts Festival, the annual budget debate and various phases of the 'Keep Hong Kong Clean' campaign.

ENGLISH SERVICE

27. Throughout the year the English Service maintained balanced programme output with the emphasis on news, information and public affairs. At the same time attention was given to the needs of minority groups, such as serious music lovers and cultural groups.

28. The English Service programmes are broadcast from 6 a.m. to 1a.m.,

19 hours per day on both AM and FM transmissions. Separate programmes on FM are broadcast in the mornings and evenings, two hours on each weekday morning, five hours on Sunday morning and three hours forty five minutes every evening.

29. A total of twenty news bulletins including news headlines is broadcast each day, supplemented by BBC news relays.

Topics

30. Radio Hong Kong's daily news programme, 'Topics', under- went several major changes throughout the year. The appointment of an Information Secretary to co-ordinate the Government's various media outlets has involved Topics in closer co-operation with other departments in helping to explain the Government's policies to the public.
