Adaptations may again be subdivided into Chinese folk tales, Western literary works, and popular novels by famous local writers.
The Lung Cheung Operatic Troupe
20. Western and pop music finds general favour but Cantonese Opera performed by the Lung Cheung Group still appeals to the older generation. The Group maintained an output of 5 to 6 shows per month. During the year 48 shows were staged in collaboration with the Cultural Services Division of the Urban Services Department. Performances were staged in the City Hall for 4 nights in May 1972 and again for 4 nights in January 1973. Public performances were staged by invitation at the CMA Exhibition Grounds, Wah Yan College, the Agricultural Show, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Music
21. Western music and modern Chinese lyrics with western melodies are increasingly popular. To cope with public demand 5 Disc Jockeys and two Producers were contracted for the presentation of classical and popular western music.
22. Cantonese record programmes and Cantonese songs sung by the Lung Cheung Operatic Troupe continue to play a major role in Chinese musical programmes. Famous Cantonese operatic stars were engaged to feature in Chinese New Year programmes. It was an all- star extravaganza that ushered in the Chinese New Year with a programme that lasted till 3 o'clock in the morning. Other music programmes include Cantonese records and instrumental music presented by local artists, among them 'Songs of the Pearl River' and 'Voice and String Harmonies'.
Children's Programme
23. The Chinese Service maintains the policy of inviting children to take part in recordings, or as guest audiences. All children's pro- grammes contain some information or educational material along with music.
24. 'The Young Visitors' serial introduces vocational training and apprenticeship systems and presents information on light industries to young listeners, helping them to choose a trade or craft for their prospective careers. In response hundreds of letters of enquiry were received.
