BROADCASTING HOUSE-DESCRIPTION
16. The new studio centre has four floors. On the roof is the radio room, housing a number of VHF and UHF link receivers and trans- mitters, which ensure that should any of the many landlines linking Broadcasting House with the Golden Hill and Mount Gough trans- mitting stations, the Cable and Wireless Mount Butler receiving station, the island studios in Sutherland House or the emergency studios in Beaconsfield House fail, communication with them can be maintained. The serial systems for this equipment are on an impressive tower above the radio room, which is floodlit at night.
17. The top floor houses the administration staff, the newsroom, with it's two studios, and news magazine and public affairs production staff for both programme Services, and the Chinese Service drama section.
18. The first floor accommodates the Controllers of the Services and their production and presentation staffs, the Programme Operations Unit which provides all ancillary services to production staff, and later on will accommodate the Controller of the Public Affairs Television Unit and his production, film, and graphics staff.

The ground floor is the main studio floor, with six continuity/ talks suites, a large music studio capable of accommodating a medium sized symphony orchestra, one large and three medium sized production studios and two narrators/interview studios. Also on the ground floor is the record and tape library, the reference library, the master control room, offices for the Deputy Chief Engineer and the Duty Engineer, and an artists room. The lobby houses the reception desk, with PABX and a call system which enables staff and artists to be reached anywhere in the building.
20. The lower ground floor is principally taken up by engineering, electrical and air-conditioning services. A comprehensive system of electrical, electronic and mechanical workshops is provided which can maintain all equipment without outside assistance. The air-conditioning plant is a chilled water system, divided into five units in such a way that independent air-conditioning can be supplied to different zones of the building for different periods of the day, thus economizing on power consumption. A 315 KVA diesel generating plant ensures that should mains power fail, certain areas of the building can continue to function, notably the continuity studios, master control room, and essential
