GENERAL

60. The technical services of Radio Hong Kong are undertaken by Cable and Wireless (H.K.) Ltd., who are responsible for the maintenance and operation of all studio, transmitting and receiving facilities.

61. The medium and shortwave transmitting centre is at Hung Hom on the Kowloon peninsula; there is also a VHF/FM transmitting station on the Island site at Mount Gough. The receiving station is part of the Cable and Wireless centre at Mount Butler, also on Hong Kong Island. The studios are located in Mercury House, the Company's Far East headquarters.

62. Although a considerable amount of planning and ordering of equipment had been put in hand in anticipation of the removal of the department from Mercury House to a reconditioned building in the old naval dockyard area during the year, this project had to be abandoned when it was discovered that the structure itself was basically unsound. Nevertheless, much of the work already undertaken will be of use when the new building, scheduled for completion in 1967, is available. Many of the planning and installation designs already completed will be utilized in the new centre; much of the equipment, of course, is common to both though minor modifications may have to be made to allow for the varia- tions in the sizes and shapes of the new studios:

63. When it was decided that Radio Hong Kong's tenure of its present accommodation in Mercury House was to be longer than had been anticipated action was taken to refurbish and rewire some of the existing installations. The English Service production suite was com- pletely rebuilt and new equipment, including an E.M.I. eight-channel console, was installed. Locally-built quick-start groove locators are now common in most studios, together with fully transistorized amplifiers and reverberation facilities.

64. The Central Control Room was also streamlined during the year, and a new 100-pair cable run to the Cable and Wireless main diffusion centre. This cable is used to connect the broadcasting control racks with the many outside broadcast line terminals throughout the Colony.

65. The number of outside broadcasts undertaken each month remained at the high average of 44. The greatest number in a single
