67. The nightly hour-long 'Music By Request' programmes have proved to be extremely popular, especially among Chinese listeners, and the producer is hard put to satisfy the many correspondents who write in to ask for their favourite music to be broadcast. Whilst BEETHOVEN, BRAHMS, MOZART, SCHUBERT and TCHAIKOVSKY are still in demand there have been an increasing number of requests for composers such as BARTOK, STRAVINSKY, KODALY and HOLST.

68. The special presentation of music on Wednesday evenings (on FM only) has continued to fulfill the function of offering performances of entire operas and oratorios. Most notable of these presentations during the year have been WAGNER'S ‘Das Rheingold', 'Die Walkure' and 'Siegfried'; VERDI'S 'Don Carlos', 'Aida', 'Othello' and 'Falstaff'; BERG'S 'Lulu' and SCHONBERG's 'Moses and Aaron'; STRAUSS' 'Salome', 'Elektra' and 'Ariadne auf Naxos'. Also presented were BACH's 'St. Matthew Passion', VERDI'S 'Requeim' and Benjamin BRITTEN'S 'War Requiem'.

69. Some of the musical talks which have been heard over Radio Hong Kong during the year included an interesting seires entitled '2000 years of Musical Criticism' and a series of programmes to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Richard WAGNER. 'Record Review' compiled from new releases of serious music to reach the Colony continued to be very popular, as was 'On Wings of Song', a programme of vocal music. The most ambitious of the years' musical presentations was a series of twenty-two programmes entitled 'Orpheus in England'-an illustrated history of music in the British Isles from the 12th century up to the present day.

MAGAZINE PROGRAMMES

70. "The Sea Around Us', a programme for those interested in ships of all sizes, continued throughout the year. Many items of both local and international interest were included. Amongst events broadcast were the start of the China Sea Race, the commissioning ceremony of one of H.M. ships-the first to take place in Hong Kong since the last war, and the launching of a new ship from one of the Colony's Dockyard with a commentator on board at the time. Perhaps the most unusual item was a broadcast by the producer in a diving suit from the bottom of the harbour.

71. 'Motoring Magazine' also had another successful year with road tests on twelve types of new cars to arrive in Hong Kong. There was also a road test of a 1906 Fiat. The programme included reports on many
