Religion

34. Radio Hong Kong continued to broadcast twice weekly pro- grammes of 'Mid-Day Prayers' as well as the relay of Sunday services from local churches. During the special Christian festivals of Easter and Christmas a considerable amount of religious music, poetry and drama was broadcast. During Lent there was a series of talks by ministers in Hong Kong.

Outside Broadcasts

35. Outside broadcasts, as in previous years, covered the major ceremonial events of the Colony. These were brought direct to listeners by a complex series of technical arrangements, the most elaborate being for the 'The Queen's Birthday Parade' which this year included a commentary from a helicopter. Other outstanding occasions were the Macau Grand Prix, the Cross Harbour Swimming Race, the Hong Kong Products Exhibition and the Agricultural Show.

Sport

36. Overseas sport was given good coverage by Radio Hong Kong. During the year the test matches between South Africa and England were relayed, as were all the important international rugby games. The major racing classics of the Turf were also relayed from the B.B.C., and, from Australia, listeners were able to follow the Centenary of the Melbourne Cup.

37. In Hong Kong, all the major sporting events were covered by commentaries, interviews, discussions and talks. The sports concerned included soccer, rugby, horse racing, golf, swimming, squash, hockey, water polo, badminton and tennis.

Charity Broadcasts

38. During the year authorized charitable organizations in Hong Kong, as well as a number of unofficial good causes, were invited to make use of the facilities of Radio Hong Kong to launch their appeals. 'Operation Fat Choy' again produced a substantial sum for the benefit of poor children at Chinese New Year. This year for the first time Radio Hong Kong decided something ought to be done by the English Service to brighten up Christmas for the needy children. 'Operation Santa Claus' was therefore mounted as a three-evening project to raise money by
